i rather think that mr elliott(if it was him) had seen many previous comments made that were worse than the one that made the press.

If that was Wayne it would have been an off the record comment which ought not to have been quoted by the journalist to whom it was made. Journalists get a lot of information off the record and use it as background. It's uncommon for a comment like the one referred to above to be quoted with an attribution (however vague) and when it happens that journalist will lose the trust of his sources.

I would think that they have already done that Peter (lost the trust of their source(s).
I've always found Kathy to be fair and level and would be very surprised if she was making news, not reporting it.
Who ever reported him for making such a light-hearted (O.K. non PC) quip was a sad person indeed.
I would hate to think that if I was sharing a chat and/or a joke in a pub and someone I didn't know was there, reported me for making a "humorous" comment to the Press.
How come, as Peter said, it's only us snowdrops who are offended, on others behalf ?

Obviously somebody with a grudge, a colleague on the council or at work or even a pupil just getting his own back for not doing his homework.

# 124...............Alas...............When a person in the Public eye ( local politician ) says to a journalist ``This is off the record ``both they and the journalist know they wish the message to get out BUT they did not say it.It happens all the time.QED.
It isn't quite that simple is it.

I am not a PC person, I think the do-gooders of this country should shoulder lots of blame for many social problems we are now experiencing but, while I agree with much of what Peter is saying, that it has turned into another playground political bashing session, Bob should have chosen better words than he did when condemning the mindless idiots that he was referring to.
You say he is intelligent, if so, he must have meant what he said because he must have known the trouble it would cause?
So I support him for condemning the violence but not for his comments and the rest would not have happened had he not made them, so I don't believe you can make excuses for him.

I will again say, bob knew fully before posting that it would cause offence and that it certainly did.
wayne elliott i would be surprized if he was the geezer from the tory party to drop bob in the poop, worked with wayne for some years, but that said wayne is a down to earth type of guy and maybe he did we may never know. as much freedom
if bob has friends like the two who stitched him up he should consider his future on the council as obviously people in his party are happy to ship on him, but thats bobs decision.
whilst we all want to have as much freedom to speak out as we can, you cannot allow people to say whatever they wiish and offend others like these past comments(not just the recent ones) have done.
with regard to off the record comments to the press, those times hav(or may)
before commenting.

I agree that Bob was most unwise to couch his comments in the terms he did. But logically the only people to be offended should be a few looters and a few people who have chosen a career on benefits. His words would never have reached those people had it not been for the press looking for an easy story. That he should resign his seat or be fired from his job is an over-reaction of Olympic proportions. I am sure he will be more circumspect in future. He is not a bad bloke, I have known him for several years and I can not remember hearing a racist comment from him.

If a comment is made to me off the record it remains off the record. There are plenty of people who have first-hand experience of that. Nothing in the article about Bob's comment was said off the record
Re: #135, many comedians, even the PC ones with no resemblance to Bernard Manning whatsoever, have sailed a bit close to the wind with some of their witty/funny/challenging comments without being hounded for supposed racism. Wit and humour are bound (or not) by different rules. You don't have to be a comedian to be funny, witty or challenging. And whether or not comments made about the comment were on or off or teetering on the edge of the record, the fact is the thing has mushroomed into silly season territory. We need to ask ourselves why..........That is probably more interesting and valid than the whole messy story itself.

my understanding of kathy is that she has integrity and plays by the rules, the same applies to the dreaded rhys.
i am surprised that the afore mentioned has not made play of the crude attack on her which later got deleted from facebook.
