Apart from the title, Honorary Freeman have the right to march with the council when we are in robes (Mayor Making, Zeebruger Day, that sort of thing), they also get a sash and a certificate.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

...and some sort of gold brooch which DTC "look after" until it's worn at formal occasions.

Surely it is also an honour for the Town - to be able to present this honour to local people who have worked for the Town as well as dignitaries who themselves bring honour on and to the Town.
To have people like Dame Vera Lynn and Lord Boyce as Freemen of Dover (as it was when Churchill was made a Freeman), gives honour to Dover as well - and that is the point in this debate/debacle.

Roger.
Any proposed Freeman as well as being honoured for what they might have done should also be honoured for what they will do.

I agree Jan - and a good point too.
Roger
Can we have a few others from the meeting posting on here to share why they did not vote for the guy? Thank you to those who have done so, even if I disagree with you in the strongest possible terms.

most certainly the liveliest thread for some time with 149 posts and 2399 viewings over about 3 days as i type.
views seem very polarised, our only town councillor member that has voted against and given a viewpoint has been sheila(very bravely i must add).
the general view is that it was a bad decision but interestingly 2 unlikely bedfellows - brian and scotchie have supported the town council decision.
i am left wondering if when the decision is reversed whether lord boyce will throw a sulk and steadfastly refuse to drive his goats and sheep along biggin street.

He will drive them but take their nappies off as they start their walk.

So how does a person get nominated in the first place? What is the criteria? Why were these three people nominated?
And also, why was this voted for / against by a small number of councillors when the decision may be overturned by the larger council? I'm probably being politically naive here but what was the point of that vote?
I was told that this forum would be an eye-opener and it's certainly been that. Thanks all for an intersting discussion and education

I think we are all guinea pigs in the middle of an experiment for which they have forgotten to set up a control group!

Did any of the contenders achieve the required 12 votes?
[ a glimpse at Roger's schedule makes him a contender IMHO]

Nomination forms are available in the Town Council offices and anyone is welcome to nominate who they like. Once the nominations are received they will be "considered" by the Full council and then voted upon. All nominations will be considered but only those who get sufficient votes will get the award.

Hi guys - have been offline for a bit. Have I missed anything? Have any of the 12 councillors, apart from the brave ones such as Chris, Sheila and JHG, volunteered an explanation yet?

Thank you Chris.
Politically neutral is probably best unless the council is heavily one way or the other.
There may be a list somewhere of all the past/present recipients for towns around the country. I'll have a look,FIO.

No Bern, not yet.
I can't see anyone else being brave enough to explain why they didn't support The Lord Warden being given the title of Freeman of Dover (nor why they turned down Dame Vera Lynn last year).
