And the group is, I suppose, supposed to speak for the town and failed to do so on this occasion. More than that, this incident small as it is is significant in that it seems to reflect the cavalier and arrogant attitude of SOME local reps who appear to believe that they are indispensable and unchallengeable and therefore free to do as they please.

Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?
#42 - that is part of the problem - lack of accountability and lack of skill.
Terry - very restrained of you not to comment. I will follow your lead and keep it zipped for once!!

I have commented Bern, see #5 & #8. If this were India I'd probably be an "untouchable" now.

You sounded like Basil Faulty there Howard on the German guest episode. "Don't mention the war; I did once, but I think I got away with it".
I seriously hope they haven't got away with it; someone like Charlie Elphicke should ask the question and so should the previous MP and if possible, the people of Dover.

that was on my mind when i posted it roger.
the reason we may have escaped is that the report is on the folkestone herald page and not on the dover express page on the website.
don't ask me why.

I had the good fortune recently to make a delivery to the soon to be operational Saga Saphire in Sicily and was talking to the 2nd engineer who had served with Lord Boyce. He said how Lord Boyce was held in unbelievably high esteem by those under him and how those sailors were so supportive of the Lord Warden's stance against Blair, and there lies part of the reason for refusing him the honour by this Labour dominated council who I don't think have a single member amongst them intitled to wear a military medal or honour, I apologise if I am wrong
Also wasn't it Lord Boyce who promoted the case for Town Councils to honour their citizens within the House of Lords?
I find the refusal of the other 2 nominees quite bizarre as well but I will comment on that later.

i cannot see that being the reason ken, all too long ago and irrelevant to dover.
i don't think we will ever know the true reason.
Political grudges go deep and long Howard. And chips on shoulders don't go away by themselves. I think we are probably owed an explanation by those who voted against. I will hope to see it on here.

Two very good points from Ken and Bern. I don't currently live in a town council ward but was born in Dover and lived in the town for over 50 years and am disgusted at this decision.
I think this won't go away without an explanation by those who voted against and depending on their explanations could go on and on. I would even hope some ex navy personnel might ask go through the procedures to ask a question about it at the next full council meeting.
A procedural question that one of those town councillors who post on here might know, is it possible for a person who has been refused the honour to be nominated again in future?

If I were Lord Boyce I would be inclined to say "go forth and urinate"

Terry, I think the good grace with which he spoke after being told of the decision was very telling, reported in one of the locals last week but I can't remember which.
Lord Boyce has too much dignity to comment, I think! I don't!! I will keep pressing for an explanation on these pages.
Would someone be kind enough to let me have the contact for DTC to whom I should write to request an explanation please?
