what a farse, not voting for the knobbies like that,to the tower i say.constables tower that is.
Honestly, I could hardly believe it when I opened my Telegraph! Own goal indeed. Discourteous as well. And yes, the guy has been very cool and well mannered about it, as could be expected. Shame on the council, though..........
This vote is a very unpleasant piece of political posturing , nasty small minded point scoring that only reflects negativly on Dover as a whole

thankfully only the telegraph has covered it so far, let's hope the tabloids don't pick up on it.

Not quite Howard, it was covered first in the Dover Express because we had a reporter at the meeting.

I can't believe that we (Dover) have shot ourselves so badly in the foot/ankle/leg etc.
To say he's got enough awards is the biggest mistake and daftest thing I have ever heard.
The kudos this would have given Dover - to have the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports, Constable of Dover Castle as a Freeman of our Town. Now obviously and sadly, the opportunity hs been lost forever.
It has to be a small-minded, petty person who led the argument against this and equally small-minded petty people who followed and voted against it.
They should hang their heads in shame; certainly not working for the Town.
As Barry says above, this is embarrassing for the Town.

It's sure to be in the Mail On Sunday. KRN Media and the mail are connected. We should hold a town meeting and debate a motion of no confidence in the town council.

I would support that Peter, unles, as someone mentioned, there weren't anymore than five attending the meeting.
Kathy, does your reporter know how many attended that meeting ?

My post about the town council using the Seven Sisters pic instead of white cliffs got put to the nationals and tv by a local media person putting it through an agency, probably gone out already.

yes that was rather more of a fun item ray, similar to the status quo thingy that was leaked to the media though.
i suspect that peter is right about the mail on sunday, i think we can expect to see some pictures of t.v. chaps standing outside the yacht club on monday evening too.

There were 13 councillors in attendance.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

OMG! How embarrassing, I can hardly believe this, why on earth has this been allowed to happen?
What are they thinking?
Surely with such an important decision as this, it should be compulsory for all Councillors to attend and a date chosen to ensure a full attendance.

I agree with that Colette, but it would be difficult to guarantee a full attendance, some may be ill, some like Jan, working.
Thanks Chris for letting us know the numbers attending - so eight people, eight councillors, voted against the Lord Warden being given the title of Freeman of Dover.
Disgraceful and shameful.

Full council meetings, and all committees, are set for the year ahead. The next years are: 24 May (Mayor Making), 4 July, 5 September, 24 October and 5 December. Then in 2013 23 January, 13 March (Honorary Freeman Meeting), 17 April and 23 May (Mayor Making).

The 8 councillors should be named and shamed as soon as possible.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

#28 sounds good to me. It's a bit of a case of Enough is Enough, don't you think? About time we, as Dover residents, shouted about a bit......and I know we have a chance to vote people in and out but frankly, the same people pop up each time, each with their own narrow agenda and empire, and it would take a tough cookie to break into that and do it effectively. This was so clearly a case of sour class grapes and total misunderstanding of processes and outcomes. Yes, they should be named and shamed and take responsibility for their incompetence and stupidity. They do not deserve the honour of representing us.

Sorry I havent responded sooner but been at work on a 12 hour shift,I was also surprised there was no discussion, and as a group we DID NOT discuss this either. It was a free vote on all three candidates and Chris will confirm not that I need him too that I voted for the Lord Warden and was the only person to vote For Dick Liggett,I did not vote for Lynn Young,as I do not believe in voting for newly retired ex Councillors.
I have heard the argument that the Lord Warden does't need the honour and yes I accept that, but I he has done so much to promote the Town and just as importantly the Cinque Ports which I am passionate about as well.
By the way I do not know who voted for who,as I do not check how people voted,I look straight ahead and vote, then I vote for what I feel and not how other people are voting.
I believe Dick Liggett should also be given the award,it costs very little and the work he has done for The Navy The Sea Cadets and The Town Council at rememberance services as well as being a greeter I think he deserved it.But I was the only one who thought so.I cannot speak for everyone but speak for myself.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
