I may have missed it if there is a thread about this already, but I see in the Telegraph that Dover council has voted against giving the freedom of Dover to our Warden of the Cinque Ports, and Charlie Elphick has quite rightly commented. Does anyone have any information or views on this? Apparently there were 5 votes in favour and 12 are needed. I can't really see why anyone would vote against it.............

I just saw this in the local paper this morning and Im embarassed for the town that it has made the national Daily Telegraph. I cant for the life of me see why the council, Dover Town Council to be clear, would not vote for such a man. He would bring a high profile and terrific image to the town, it is extraordinary that he wasnt voted for. He has fulfilled various ceremonial duties here in Dover with the most goodwill imagineable, I have photographed him on several occasions doing just that.
I'm bewildered...bewildered..

I must admit that that I too was astonished. I'm even more surprised that the decision and the voting were made public. There are some councillors unfortunately who are narrow minded and bloody bolshie.

what a strange story must have been a reason for the refusal.
we have a few town councillors as members who may wish to enlighten us.

I doubt if any would comment Howard. I have to say that I have an enormous amount of respect for most of the councillors, they are hard working and conscientious. There are however four or five that I would not throw a lifebelt to.

I must say that I was surprised that the vote was conducted in public as it meant there was no debate, having a debate on such a thing would be inappropriate in public given that it could effect on peoples feelings. The first some of us saw of the nominations was at the meeting although it was clear that one of the political groupings had discussed it at one of their meetings outside of council. In my own opinion the nominations should have been discussed at a closed meeting of the full council prior to the public vote - unfortunately this was not the case.
By the way, I did vote in favour of Lord Boyce, as I did for Lynn Young. I voted against Mr Leggit only because of another pending award.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

So........is anyone able to give us some reasons for this embarassment?

We are at one re your comments Chris. And I would willingly give you my lifebelt any time!
Bern, there seems to be an anti-posh element in the council. That's the only way I can put it.

This gets even more bizarre and it has turned into a national embarassment...
As I said in post 4 this man , a national figure, has appeared many times in Dover supporting the community. I have a couple of ordinary pictures here to show you, I chose the ordinary ones to make the point. They are from the Priory Forum FunDay in Pencester a few years back. Not a big ceremonial job but an ordinary workaday event..if i can put it that way...and he came along to do the necessary and very good he was too...
As I said we do have ceremonial pictures in our archive too.
Do we, people living here, get a say in this?

as far as we know he does not eat babies so why the snub?
i appreciate chris's comments regarding discussions being private with such an issue, but we should be told why the decision was made as is it now a national issue with dover once again being seen as a bunch of fruitcakes.
Indeed. A bit disappointing. And yes, a belated thank you to Chris for his comments, and for being the only rep to brave the forum!!!

I can see that this was not a good decision taken by DTC and does not show Dover in a good light, having spent time with Lord Boyce on several occasions he is a most charming man and as Lord Warden holds that position for life.
Unfortunately I was not present at the meeting due to work commitments but I am in agreement with Chris's post 9, that a proper meeting should have been held where all the Town councillors were in attendance and opinions could have been aired.

#16 Peter the trouble is this embarrassment from the majority of our elected members will be forgotten by the next election.
Are we to be told who attended and did not vote in case we do actually remember, or should we but hope that there were only 5 councillors at the meeting.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

it always seems that as soon as we get some good publicity something follows that makes us look village idiots.
this time we have had good coverage of the launches then straight after this happens.
thankfully lord boyce has tried to play it down even though he cannot legally take his herd of goats through town.
