I voted against.
Honorary Freeman of Dover, a very high award with certain criteria, an ideal person for this would have been the late Jack Hewitt (RIP), who worked tirelessly for the Dover not only promoting the town but working alongside its people.
Lord Boyce was elected as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports and will remain in this office until the inevitable, with this post he promotes Dover and other Cinque Port towns, and is very well respected, but prior to his appointment of Lord Warden, we knew nothing of him, or any work that he had done for this town or its people.
Honorary Freeman is not only for people that promote the town, but for people that work alongside the townspeople, another example Terry Sutton, who has promoted the town, and its people by his reporting, but also recording the towns history for future generations

Sorry Sheila - it's also about the Kudos having Lord Boyce as a Freeman of Dover would bring (would have brought) the Town - the benefits it would have brought.
As Barry said it is about the bigger picture, about having the vision to realise what is good for Dover and what is bad. You chose bad.
If it was good enough for Winston Churchill, it was surely good enough for Lord Boyce; or, putting it the other way round, Dover Councillors previously realised the benefits of having Winston Churchill as their Freeman, why do the current lot not feel the same about Lord Boyce ?
This was not only an insult to Lord Boyce, but an insult to Dover and the people of Dover. A very bad decision Sheila, not only for you personally, but for the Town of Dover.

I can't believe you said that Brian. If that's the level at which you think at, I am so pleased you are not an elected rep. so pleased you have no influence.
That has got to be the most inane posting on this Forum - ever.

I totally agree with Roger regarding Brian's post.
Dover desperately needs friends in high places. Everything possible needs to be done to achieve that and to gain as much positive publicity and image as possible. All that vote did was embarrass the town and demonstrate a short-sighted parochial attitude.

I'm sure Dame Vera would have been elected to the Freedom many years ago if the town council had the power at the time.

Sheila, both Lyn Young and Dick Leggit fit your criteria to a tee but no honour. In lyn's case the refusal was purely the settling of old scores, not the most popular of people but by god she got things done. There is no excuse for refusing Dick Leggit.
As the decision appears to have been made at a sub committee level and not a full council, unless ratified at full council, then the decision can be reversed.
Those elected are meant to represent what we the electorate would want and it is blatantly obvious this was a decision we did not want so should be reconsidered. Many years go the council of which I was a member decided the Town needed a large clock to be placed at the junction of Tower Hamlets and London Road. Despite there being considerable public opposition to it we pressed ahead, with the result that the Independnt Alliance was formed to oppose us, not only were they successful but the face of Dover politics changed forever. I stongly suggest that those councillors who are hiding behind their anonymity learn the lessons of history.

Roger I did not make a bad decision, and as for Winston Churchill he was not awarded freeman of Dover I beleive that was inherited, when it is inherited it can be handed down to the next of kin, whether or not they do anything.
This Honorary Freeman dies with you, and cannot be handed down, Vera Lynn was made famous for her song, that was written by an American, but she did nothing for Dover and made plenty of money in the process
