I have been a soup kitchen volunteer for about a year now.
From my understanding, we do not wish to operate out of a building, as there would be more space for the clients who are drunk or high to cause problems, and it would be harder to manage asking them to leave at the end.
Also, although the Catholic church offered us the use of some land, this would be closer to the residents who originally complained, and as the land is off the main highway, the volunteers felt that it may not be safe for them.

#81. A very succinct and clear post which answers many questions. Congratulations on being a caring community spirited person. So on behalf of myself and most people I know, a sincere thank you.

Things are becoming clearer after post 81 and we can now see why the residents reported problems repeatedly.

There appears to be differing views on the use of buildings
hopefully this can be cleared up and a solution found
these volunteers deserve it

This all seems a mismatch of information.

It is clear that the soup kitchen clientèle are on the whole well behaved and appreciative of the service the volunteers provide, there is however, much as there is not only in our local community but on a wider basis, a small hardcore of troublesome individuals. DDC seem to be prepared to disadvantage the majority of users and the volunteers for the behaviour of a few; not particularly reasonable, equitable or community minded.
I am surprised that the local constabulary have not had a presence, both to put a lid on any anti-social behaviour, but also given the town centre is an alcohol control zone. But then they do little in the rest of the town centre to control alcohol use and its predictable impacts.

My views entirely Ross, if there was an element of ASB why did they not act. There should have been more communication with DDC ,before they behaved like Scrooge, and removed this much needed life line

When I have served the clients, and the same goes for a lot of the volunteers, there has been no antisocial behaviour. People do have their addictions, but know that if they cause a problem, the kitchen is immediately closed down and the police are then called. The clients tend to police themselves, helping the volunteers to carry out what we volunteer for, giving the needy a meal, sometimes it is the only meal that they get on that day.

natty - Well done and thank you for your dedication to providing such an invaluable service.
So it appears there are minimal amounts of disruptive behaviour and it boils down to a simple case of NIMBYism?

Dear All
The Soup Kitchen and its lack of a suitable relocation site are to be raised by Councillor P Walker at Dover District Council meeting on Wednesday 30th November at the DDC Council Chamber, Council Offices, White Cliffs Business Park, Whitfield.
The meeting starts at 6pm, the item is 8b3 but might be brought forward.
We need as many people as possible to fill all the public seats to show to the Councillors that their ‘effective’ closure of the Dover Soup Kitchen is of great concern to a large number of electors.
If possible please attend this meeting to show that the Dover Soup Kitchen has all the support it needs.

What about the Health Centre car park? The Kent College side by all the trees seems ideal to me.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Charlie had had zero involvement as far as I know but quickly jumped on the bandwagon when the "good news" came out.

Charlie E. is a professional politician, and all that goes with it. Shapeshifters they are.
He built the clinic up Coombe Valley, laid the Railway alongside Shakespeare Beach,
Extricated himself from the Peoples Port, when it got too close to challenging the Dover Harbour Board.
Now he has saved the Soup Kitchen!!!
Goodwin Sands next.

Don't forget, he also single handedly closed down the Jungle in Calais. What a superhero!

Was chatting to a chap I used to work with who lives in Adrian Street and he is very concerned about the soup kitchen being sited where it is planned noting that a street light that was there previously is no more. Expect something of a battle getting planning permission.
