Cameron`s attack on Police backfires. Both he and Theresa May claimed their actions quelled the riots.NOT TRUE.Police made the decision without consulting them.
Flashman had to be talked down not to put Army on our streets!
54% question Cameron`s Leadership.
Major mistake to take on Police and lose badly.Chief Constables play golf with the Establishment and massage their ears and consolidate the message in the 19th hole and over dinner.( bit like Chipping Norton ) Shires will be uneasy that their Law and Order credibility will be damaged.
71% now saying Police numbers must not be cut.Flashman/Osbourne still saying cuts remain!!Who will win? `U` turn number ?????
Boris and piranhas lurking it in the wings.

"major mistake to take on police and lose badly". Would that that had been the fate of the looters and rioters.

The majority of the public doesn't want cuts in the Police numbers, in fact we need more Police.
The recent riots have proved this.
London is rife with knife and gun-carrying crime, and the riots started with an incidence of gun crime, when someone was threatening public security with a loaded gun.
To reduce Police numbers would mean giving in to the people who find this normal and then go on the streets attacking and threatening the Police for doing their duty.
These same protesters (who believe that it is normal for someone to threaten the public with a loaded gun) started off the riots and looting, and we should not give in to them.
They even had the audacity to state that the initial attack on the Police in Tottenham was a "peaceful protest", even though its participants started attacking the public and destroying public infrastructure and sparked off 5 days of mayhem in many English cities.
I suppose it was "political correctness" on the part of the media to say that this initial protest "was peaceful". Quango-equality policy, so as not to "offend" people who just will not accept that crime is illegal.

wouldn't it have been better to appoint the american as an aide to mr orde rather than no.10 dave?
it would have not put the police's nose out of joint then.

I can see nothing wrong with picking the brains of somebody who has experience in dealing with gangs. I suspect Sir Hugh Orde has his back up and anything the American cop said would be ignored however good it was.
The whole point is do we need more police or do we make proper use of the police we have by not having them tied up doing paperwork. I still tend to blame the top brass who sit behind their nice big desks in their comfortable offices coming up with bright ideas that the policeman or woman, who has to deal with the public, has to follow

As discussed on another thread the Peter principle is alive and well in our police. The top echelons are in many cases part of the problem rather than part of the solution. I see no reason why proven expertise should not be bought in where necessary. Again it's the difference between leadership skills and management skills in many cases I suspect.

And now we have the chief contstable of british rail police also saying if cutbacks take place front line policing will be affected and its wrong to say otherwise.

I cannot speak for the police, but I can notice that all of us are in the position of having to re-evaluate what is crucial for business purposes. I am working on a project for a public sector organisation which will mean re-evaluating and re-targeting services. This will inevitably mean efficiencies - and remember that actually means using YOUR money more wisely - but it will also, if done properly, mean better more muscular services better targeted and better managed.

The point being, that Cameron is looking so weak, where as boris is looking so much stronger.
that would be a worry for me if i were a conservative,
