At local level (Town and Parish) only when a vacancy occurs it must be advertised, and then the electorate can call for an election. If there is no call then the existing council members can co-opt a willing volunteer to fill the vacancy.
The exception is the first meeting after an election when there is a vacancy and it can be done at the meeting, the election notice is regarded as the equivalent of advertising the vacancy so no need to repeat the process.
It's done to avoid the cost of an election at local level where funds are restricted when there is only one candidate.

Seeing as my ward is stuck with Sue Jones can anyone tell of any sterling work she has done for the community all I know of her is the kiosk debacle?

That was my perception, but I'm sure there must be more and I would like to be shown different.

One of those many councillors that you never hear of doing anything for their ward or area but want and expect your vote come election time.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Sue isn't my cup of tea politically and I'm not a town resident so have no say in the makeup of DTC, but I have seen her at a lot of public meetings and events where there have been no other DTC or DDC councillors present, and she has been a great supporter of the River Dour volunteers.

Should add I haven't met Howard or anyone called Reginald Barrington at any of these public meetings!

Been to enough public meetings to know not to bother with them, the Town Hall and the Ark normally the venues where representatives of the health authority tell us that they were there to listen about the downgrading of the old Buckland Hospital or the Harbour board saying the same about listening but also telling us about there great plans for the foot. The recent meeting at our community centre was different altogether as the powers that be had to listen to the public and take action accordingly.
Incidentally Ray in what way has Sue Jones supported the River Dour volunteers?

I am a town resident Ray and still have no say in the make up of DTC, one reason for my lack of engagement, but the main reason I don't attend is that I can't keep my mouth shut when I'm being told untruths, mis-truths and being blatantly misled ( it used to be called lying but Mr little put me right over that a while ago) and would be ejected from more meetings than not!
I was unaware of the correlation between attending meetings and the right to question, challenge and as Jan says to stir though.

#80 probably refers to Hansell run PC. They have different rules to the rest. Eythorne/Elvington have Hansell approved rules.

That is a point as I have never seen the councillors for my ward of the DTC or even DDC engage or contact about what they are intending to fight for or develop/change. Unless I am missing something, as not even seen a link to a web page of facebook page with info. It always seems to be a case of chasing a councillor when you have an idea/concern never a case of them even putting a little info out to maybe reach those they represent.

We used to have many councillors at all levels on here at one time, I can only think of Paul, Roger and Pam as being current members.

Darren, re 94, are you able to say which ward you live in? I represent Tower Hamlets, hold monthly surgeries both at The Ark and Beacon (footprints) details published on my councillor page on DDC. Do also put out occasional newsletters. Been active and am active in various groups within the area.

Interesting mix of candidates there for you to vote for Darren, Simon Bannister is a blast from the past and John Paine is a colourful character.
