Veteran campaigner Vic Matcham believes he may be setting a new record - by standing for seven seats in next month's elections. And he has won four seats without even facing the voters.
Mr Matcham, who is 69 and is currently a member of River Parish Council, set his sights on a seat on the district council, another on Dover Town Council, as well as five parish councils.
"I think it must be a record," he said.
"But it's not about promoting Vic Matcham, it's about trying to get councillors out and about campaigning, and more people to go to the polls and vote. I am concerned there will be a very poor turn-out at the elections with the same people standing. Without new faces, there is no incentive to make changes in how to run a parish.
"Too many times parish councillors don't have to worry because there are either insufficient candidates nominated for the seats available, or there are just the right number. So there isn't an election.

Vic, just as well you will not have to do either in the seats where you have a walk-over with your legs also the voters will not have to bother going to the polls.

Without having a single vote cast for him Vic is a member of 4 different Parish Councils.
He will be deciding on local taxes (parish precepts) and how to spend that money.
So in 3 of the 4 parishes he will not be personally affected by any of the tax and spend decisions he makes.

seems like apathy rules in the shires here, none called for a referendum on the port, then moaned about it after.
now they have to drag vic kicking and screaming to make up the numbers at the parish councils.
vic being the selfless bloke that he is has gone with the demands of the public. - 6 April 2011 15:50100272Howard, here's a different view.
We didn't call for a referendum on the port because of 1) the cost to our parish finances 2) the small number in our parish which would make the vote less likely to be noticed than the DTC vote 3) a trust that the facts of the case would be assessed on their merits.
And I did hear rumours as to why several current parish councillors decided not stand again, work it out for yourself

And I have been going round the parishs today looking at what needs to be done which I can talk about. Idid see that the Lydden paish council notice case was not up todate,and after a very close look there was alot of pot holes in the road,that road does need doing up.Just afew I was looking at,.
I must say I am 100% with Mr Newsam about the Referendum of the port.as you know the Town council get over £600.000 each year,but the parishs get alot less to work with,I can only say what River get at this time ,but the rest will be about the same of even less and River get about £66.000 ayear,so the town council do have very good funding and a good Bank Balace. - 6 April 2011 17:48100286I know councillors don't have to be sworn in at the first meeting but either Lydden or River are going to know they don't come first in Cllr Matcham's affections
As for the notice board, it's kept that way so outsiders don't know what's going on, most of our communication is done over the garden fence or in The Fox (as our locals are still closed
)
And the potholes are known locally as tourist traps, KCC fill em in, we dig em out and it keeps the local garage going fixing tyres and suspensions (only joking on that one, but you should see the size of our moles) - Keith Sansum1
