that is assuming that it is the olympic committee that want to close it. - 21 November 2011 07:54138139It won't be LOCOG who want to close it, but DDCs Olympic committee, which will be made up of officers and members.
LOCOG have a major say in the events that will be put on in the Towns where the Torch is coming to/through, but how those events are actually implemented, will be organised by those Councils.
It's the easy answer, but in this instance, not the right one.

What a delight it is. I had feared it might have been some staid affair;cherubs, dolphins and the like. Phew!!
Of all of the photographs that I have seen on the forum this is the one that matches the awe of the seascapes and brings the ever fascinating interplay of the natural elements of light and water into the centre of town, little wonder that the children agree.
However, I can appreciate that the the 'din' of children's laughter and the delightful distraction that goes with it will tend to deflect attention from the dread of terrorist attack and coalition golds.
Who's town do you think it is?

- 21 November 2011 18:30138211According the minutes of the Planning Dept of DDC dated 25/03/09 the fountain generates crime. I quote:
* There have been 11 incidents of damage to the fountain between July
and October 2008;
* Night-time economy crime is invariably a mix of violence against the
person, criminal damage and public order offences, mostly alcohol
fuelled;
* A fountain is a potential generator for crime and disorder and is a key
contributory element to an increase in public order offences and
anti-social behaviour. Particular concerns include drunks sitting on
the fountain and climbing the boxed in fountain, the fountain becoming
a receptacle for litter and other detritus, subject to incidents of
damage, eg. foaming, jumping in the fountain and its use as a urinal.
Removal of the fountain is strongly recommended to reduce the risks
to community safety and to increase the space available to the public.

I'd like to know how many people have been seriously injured in the fountain before it suddenly became a Health and Safety hazard.
Hands up who believes the fountain will reopen in 2013? Anyone? - 21 November 2011 18:43138215what a contrived report, everything in it points to alcohol fuelled misbehaviour.
so why do the council licence the pubs that the behaviour emanates from.
the fountain is the victim here, this is like saying that an innocent person walking through market square after closing time is responsible for any assault on them.
this report is dated 2 and a half years ago yet it doesn't seem to have been an issue with councillors though they knew what it meant.
