It's rubbish, of course. Many towns have fountains that don't have to be turned off if there is a southerly wind, an R in the month, or anyone under the age of 55 in the vicinity. Those other towns, I suspect, have fountains fit for purpose and a group of reps who give a flying one.

Very nice picture there Howard. The fountain looks so harmless in that picture...why cant it just be left alone. The kids love it, everyone loves it... you see kids sticking there hands in it and doing a bit of splashing, and walking along and around the wall, they love it.
There were big anti prison rallies held in the Square there, I think I put up a picture not so long ago of that time, and the fountain was functioning normally with no bother at all. No harm came to it nor to any of the demonstrators. There are no sharks swimming in it.

I think the sharks are all up in DDC offices at Whitfield thinking up how they can be negative to the town, I am not thinking of the councillors.

The answer seems simple to me.
They are doing away with the Pencester bandstand, yes.
10 ton of concrete, a few bit's of wood, the shape is already there.
Hey presto........a new band stand.

grass grows by the inches but dies by the feet.

It's great to see the fountain still operating in the middle of November, long may it continue.

i had forgotten about the bandstand, "the future of which is up for discussion".
how ironic that after a summer when it finally got used a bit we could see its demise.
this may be an integral part of mark's master plan of concreting over pencester gardens.

Instead of doing away with it, why not find ways of making more use of it ?
Roger
The Bandstand is being hit by graffiti on the riverside, if anyone wants to view it.
This is well out of order, placing things in the town at great expense of our money.....and just deciding to get rid of same..................
Thus is not going down well with the Townsfolk.............

How deep is the water in the fountain,I know it does not take much water for someone to drown in,but there always a few people around if somebody should fall in to drag them out

didn't know that about the graffiti, these italians get everywhere.
getting back to the concerts, the problen has been the same when john used to organise them many years ago and again by the town council this summer - no publicity.
back in august i went along to 4 excellent concerts, when the bands started playing they usually outnumbered the audience.
gradually people homed in when they heard the music and everyone then had an enjoyable time, ian and ted will bear me out.

Ive added a picture of the fountain now to the frontpage and added a few words. Took a stroll over yesterday to look at the fountian and there she was in full glory in the gorgeous morning sunshine. And as I mentioned previously... with little kids exitedly playing next to it, enjoying the spray and putting their hands in the water. The picture on f/p shows one of same...aged about 6.
No kids get exited about boarding, no tourist either, no citizen will glance at it and say..."wow what lovely boarding"...no matter if it is newly designed.

right here we go,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
i dont feel right, but comments by peter and myself on the council being OFFICER LED is clearly being shown to be the case as john and roger are showing as they are saying they had no idea of this officer decision.
its crazy crazy crazy to close the fountain, more so as peter says(thats twice agreeing with peter lol) that there are so many ways to solve the issues of soap suds if thats the problem.
what's most important here is we are seeing the council not looking ahead to see dover prosper, but instead finding reason's why it cant do things, so very negative.
im with collette people power does work and i think we should use all means to stop any moves to close the fountain.
a start can be by us all using the local media to put our case
and writing to officer led DDC to stop any closure
as for the town council, like roger says they have an opinion, but couldn't close the fountain.

As I mentioned on a previous posting, the thoughts are that because there will be events on most week-ends next summer and the fountain is not generally turned on until around April, they won't turn it on at all because they fear an accident to someone or the fountain.
I believe this permanent closure (for 2012) is completely unnecessary - and wrong.

this is purely about cost saving, nothing else.
we have all those plant troughs and seats in market square that are just as hard if not harder if you walk into them.
will they be roped off?
Totally with Keith and Colette. It is a frankly stupid false economy. Pauls lovely picture on the front page shows what a draw the fountain could be, and the lack of publicity for the events at the bandstand are unforgivable, but all too common in Dover. The people tasked with these things must be made more accountable, and people power does have some effect. Power to the People!
