the die is cast, sensible suggestions will not stop the inevitable.
there was a meeting in dover town hall approximately 9 years and 1 month ago to stop the fountain being closed then.
the plan was to replace it with a piece of public art, it will actually happen this time.

good luck john, no doubt roger will join you on this one but i suspect that it is a done deal.
once it closes this month it would not be due to open until may 2013, people will have forgotten it was ever open in the first place.
i am unclear as to the inolvement of the town council on this one unless the district council tried to get them to take it over like the toilets.

Sorry Charlie, no political ambitions. I get more pleasure out of turning the key in the politicians' backs!!
Quite happy just to remain a community director of the Peoples Port Trust for now.

in other words there is nothing that non cabinet members can do.

No there is Howard,we need to know who made that decision, why and when, this is more like the Toilets closing rather than the railings Howard

I have written asking about the fountain and our (in)ability to open it and operate functions, at the same time.
I'll let you know the response.

I am in danger of thinking like Vic here (!) but Jonh's comment in post 24 says it all. DDC is officer led not councillor led.
Democracy? I don't think so.

The whole closing fiasco is a cost cutting exercise, much cheaper to close the thing altogether than keep sticking those awful wire cages round it. The fountain should be running when events are ON to promote the town.
Roger, good luck with the enquiry I bet health and safety is included in any reply.

Exactly Jan, I suppose if DDC ran a cafe they'd close it for lunch.

I think they should take the name of Dover out of the Dover District Council heading and just call it the District Council.

Kids sitting by the fountain in August this year. Its one of our best assets, a lovely feature. The amount of people that take that familiar picture of the castle with the fountain in the foreground is huge in number. Every visitors favourite pic. I used a slightly different view here...
Its a bad move, there are very few 'assets' in that part of town. Its a big favourite with cruise visitors and so on. We need to give them more facilities instead of taking them away. Visitors spend money. Visitors return.

can anyone think of a more attractive feature in our town, i cannot?
the comments above about visitors and the money they spend should be taken into account when cost cutting measures are discussed.
we will all await the reply roger gets with a lot of interest.

This is the email I have written to the Head of Property Services and the responsible Portfolio Holder:
"Good Morning
Being the responsible officer/member people for the fountain in the Market Square I would like to ask if it is true that it will stay closed for the whole of 2012 ?
I understand the excuse made, is because there are a number of functions on during next year and it is felt that we as a Council cannot operate the fountain and have functions on at the same time.
I hope this is not true; if it is, I cannot believe that such a defeatist approach is being taken, this will make us look so inadequate as a Council.
This year we had much of the Market Square dug-up for much of the summer, next year we are going to (if the rumours are true) have the fountain closed for the whole of the year.
Please, whatever the reason/excuse, do not do this; the fountain is loved by the Towns-people and the visitors to our Town: it is the focal point of the Market Square - another consideration, give the retailers there a fighting chance too, please.
Kind Regards
Roger (Walkden)

I can see the fountain in Market Square going the same way of the once beautiful ones on the seafront, before my time but I've seen the pictures. If DDC could close or cover up the White Cliffs they would too
Bring back the Bluebirds!
