The new 'Robust, Durable and Safe' design for the 'fire sprinkler' cover could well be a video representation of the fountain in action beamed 'live' to the large screen in Market Square. Now that would be a sight to behold

Here is the innards of the fountain, this is what it looks like under the flow...picture taken in 2008 when it was serviced following at attack of washing up liquid or similar.
Always great to have the fountain in full flow. Filling it in should not be an option for consideration nor should boarding it up.
A great email from Roger there to the powers that be...will be interesting to see what transpires.

This is ludicrous! Absolutely mind-boggling

We have all got to get together on this one. People Power is whats needed

colette mentions people power and it did work back in 2002.
things are different now the idea is to close for one year only to make way for "events".
not sure how that works as the fountain will still be "in situ".
anyway getting back to the situation the fountain will be boarded up for 18 months and then supposedly reopened.
we will then be told that it is in a bad way and too expensive to repair or parts are not available.

Well they would say that.
Why can a permanent screen , transparent of course , be put up around the fountain so it can still work but there is no chance of things being put in it or people getting in to it ?

who ever is respoancable for this inane desion needs to planted in the empty fountain, and then some one fill it with quick drying concrete.

Sadly , that appears to be the case Howard . Hopefully Roger and John can bring some pressure to bear , to stop that happening . I know they will do thier utmost

they will do all they can sarah, both are diligent public representatives, i suspect they will get no joy though.
brian has a rather drastic idea but could find considerable support in the town.

I know the thinking is that there will be a number of events throughout next year and so it will be easier to close it for good (well 2012).
With public liability insurance (which we (DDC) must surely have) I can't see why events and the fountain can't be working at the same time and if there has been advice or instructions from the H & S people, then the events will only be on at week-ends so there's still during the week it can be operating.
I can appreciate that LOCOG will be "running the show" next year to a certain extent, but I don't believe they will be telling us to turn off the fountain.

The main point is that the whole fountain idea was badly thought out in the first place.
You do not create a feature that is not suitable to use when there are a lot people in the vicinity however nice it looks when it is working.
It should run all the time, it must cost a fortune to keep putting up fencing and then take it down again, hardly cost effective.
