10:2477785Ross, well done.
So why the Hell haven't Charlie and the movers and shakers behind the project put out a succinct list of bullet points like yours?
(p.s. Any idea if there's going to be a discount for yacht owners??)

10:3977789that was the point i made after the launch bob.
it was only by chatting with the sea france man i found out the nuts and bolts of the scheme, all this thread could have been avoided if questions could have been asked of charlie st the time.

12:4077808Ross you are factually accurate in all you say. I would also add:
m. The bid which been made today is an indicative bid made on behalf of the community by a few concerned citizens. It does not commit us or the rest of the population of Dover. What it does do is to prevent DHB management from suddenly rushing out a deal with a foreign buyer with Dept of Transport officials' connivance, and presenting it as a fait accompli.
n. The bid has the wings to fly. The banks who will fund it are onside. It has the support of all the ferry companies. The unions consider it to be the best alternative. Many of the details are commercially sensitive and the board of the People's Port Trust are under binding non-disclosure agreements. That is why there is little detail in the public domain.
o. After the Transport Minister has issued her decision, the next steps will be disclosed. In the meantime there will be a fundraising effort because if the community bid goes ahead there are going to be some serious professional fees to pay.
p. At some time before the bid goes unconditional the people of Dover will be invited to vote on the proposal.

14:3777820Mr Matcham, in reply to your post #136, I was present at the town council meeting where both Charlie and Bob Goldfield set out their cases. Most of the time I have been working behind the scenes with several others to put flesh on the bones of the original idea.
And no, I have not got my £10 back. I fully expect last Saturday's lunch will leave me £300 out of pocket.

14:4577822He could probably have swung an invitation. But then I would have been £320 out of pocket.

18:2777877Well I have to make the observation about Mr Elphick and his band of 80-90 brothers who turned out for his great launch of the peoples port, hardly inspiring was it??
It would appear that Mr Elphick has voted himself into the chairmanship of the Dover "Pied piper association" and we all know what happened to people who listened to him. Charlie Elphick or the pied piper that is,take your pick!!

19:2277897In fact you're right there, Jimmy. He jumped the queue. He should be waiting to see what the Secretary for Transport decides with all the representations! It seems his launch looks like a sieve now. It's been shot at from all sides!

19:5577903surely chas has to produce something to show the secretary of state?
he has done this, i understand, so we will have to wait and see what the government decide is the best idea.
i cannot help but wonder what dubai ports and the port of calais amongst others are up to.

20:2077908howard,probably putting a better deal together.
two things spring to mind with the arabs and french,
1,if dubai ports buy the port will any american cruise ships/passengers use the port of dover.remember when dubai ports brought p/o lock stock and ports.
2,will the port of calias keep the staff and presant system going.

You either cannot or will not read what has been posted here or for your own obtuse political reasons want to continue to cause mischief.
Jimmy, I am not sure what you were expecting from our MP, he came up with an idea, discussed it with others, who have encouraged him to follow it up at no small expense to each and every one of those involved - normally this sort of behaviour is lauded as "getting of your backside" but clearly not in this instance.

21:1377932If Charlie and like minded people had not got anything going, the Port would have already been sold off. We definitely need to wait and see what happens, giving out confidential details too early could cause problems with the bid. I'm sure public meetings will be held and everything explained if the preliminary bid is successful. Anything that helps restore Dover must be a good thing.

21:1977937And what did Mr Prosser do to keep the port from being sold off to foreign interests? I believe he wrote a couple of newspaper articles and asked one question at PM's questions. Wow.

21:2777939Ross Miller,
Your loyalty to Mr Elphick is rather touching in this age of hard nosed money men. Just who exactly has blue Charlie discussed his proposal with?? You, the man in the moon, who?? the people of Dover?? possibly a few of his local lieutenants, dare I ask is blue Barry already in the know??
It is one thing to stand on the sailing club singing the "The White cliffs of Dover" it is a far more serious business putting pen to paper and putting down in writing exactly what his plans are comprised of.
It is quite farcical if he expects the people of this town to put there rather scarce money on the line and buy so called shares. As far as I am aware there are appeoximately 30000 people living in Dover and if every last one of them bought a share that would amount to a grand total of £300,000, leaving a slight short fall of £399,700,000. I dare say he could appeal to the local parish councils, (every little helps) on the other hand he could try coming to his senses.

21:2877940I am not a red but Mr Prosser done alot more than that Mr Garstin,he was at most of the meetings and would always getup and have his say.Again if you did not follow the sell of the port from day 1 then you did not see or hear what was said at anyone time and by who.I rest my case.

21:4477944Come on boys, stop the bickering. You can't all have the last word.
There is little any of us can do until a decision is made, by the powers that be, about what is going to happen.
