09:2778016You should all note that attempts are being made to stress the non-political aspects of the bid. The bid is made on behalf of everyone, not the local Tories. For example, one of the board members is Bob Markham, ex-town Mayor and long-standing member of the Labour Party.
But then I am telling you what you already know, as I am sure you will have checked out the Peoples' Port website (which contains that information).
This is my last post until further information becomes available.

11:2378042Alright, Roger, so I have to return to the thread! I believe in the ideal of a local referendum on an important local issue, and a national referendum on an important national issue. And that a proposal should be presented and publicly debated, with the possibility for other proposals on the same issue to be debated too, before proceeding to the vote.
Yet, it would seem unrealistic for Dover's community to actually administer the Port by way of local periodic decrees once a new status has been defined by Act of Parliament. One would expect an administering board, such as DHB, to administer the Port for technical reasons.
The issue that is actually at the core of the ongoing consultaions re. Dover Port is whether the People of Dover agree to the privatisation of our Port, and if we would like to see some Port revenue coming into the Town, not whether we should cough up tenners and have the priviledge of collectively sitting down and decreeing the Port's daily administration.

11:3478049Barry W,
I do not wish this ill feeling to go on any longer than necessary. We shall both have to accept that we have diametrically opposite political opinions and beliefs. I do not dislike tories on a personnal basis only there philosophy. I have always been a great admirer of Churchill, Anthony Eden , Macmillan and believe it or not Neville Chamberlain. I fully realise that people are decent at heart and only want the best for the people. Trouble is how to achieve such a goal?? I have my opinion and you have yours so lets leave it at that, besides you know I am right!!
I then offer you an apology and trust that we do not revert to such behaviour in the future it does nothing for either of us.

13:1878063Fair comment Jimmy and apology accepted.
I too can admire socialists for their principals and as individuals while totally disagreeing with their views, Benn, Foot, Atlee being examples.
What I dislike and disapprove of is socialism as I consider it to have repeatedly failed this country, as applied by Labour and other countries where it has often had even more disasterous results in application.

14:3178078Blimey,
people falling out with Barryw and can't be blamed this time !!!!!!
So to the latest posts,
Without doubt lot's of local people have an interest in the outcome of both charlies proposal and the sell off in general.
It's a lttle sad that Peter continues to just attack mr prosser rather than get behind his leaders proposal.
Barryw still appears to be unable to accept that others on here may have differing views, for me lets have a debate don't give a ship whether it's a tory/labour/lib dem/monster ravng loony party that manage to the best for the port of Dover so Roger a little bit of even handedness here.
ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS

15:0978088i don;t really see it as a party political issue, the way i see it the choice is between an unknown conglomerate and the new proposal which does at least offer us all some input into how it is run.
for example the present harbour board upkeep our excellent promanade, seating, shelters and the beach are kept up to an acceptable standard, the water is safe for swimming in, the prince of wales pier etc.
what incentive would a massive foreign money machine have for keeping standards high?

18:4878128I am trying to arrange for a .pdf of the offer letter to be uploaded to the People's Port website, then you will all be in possession of the same information as the PM and the Transport Secretary.
Every member of the Board is keen that the process should be as transparent as possible without releasing information which might prejudice the outcome.
Will post the link when it is done.

00:3278191I am sure they can, but will they really read it? or just read what they want to read into it?

00:3378192Well Ross, it is all in the public domain now, what do you make of it? And this is the full version, no adornments, no comment, nothing. Hopefully the lack of a newspaper editor to 'process' the data will not inhibit understanding?
