10:3577654Jeez! I think I support the idea of obtaining some hard facts before opening the cakehole, here!!!! Opinions - 1; Details - 0.
But it has been fun following this!

10:4377656I must admit Bern, I'm not completely clear. Although I can't stop thinking of the Steptoe and son episode where they are sold the lead from their own roof.

10:5377657Bern alot of the facts are out in the open it is not just opinions ,as you have put it, also have you been following it right from the start when the D,H,B, first said they need to sell the port. Many of us have and turned up at the meetings held about the port. It is just not a opinion.

10:5477658Ha!! I see your point. The bald fact is, though, that without putting in some cash - however that is done - individuals can't expect a say in the management. Another way of putting that is that this is an opportunity, if it comes off, to have a say in the management.

11:1477662the point made by bern in post 104 is how i see it, any dosh we put in will be a drop in the ocean, the idea being that anyone that buys a stake will get a vote on who is on the board.
i cannot see it ever being one share one vote, i would imagine the city financiers and ferry companies would get a much larger say.

11:5477668The constitution of the trust has been written so that no one group can ever gain control of the port.

12:0177669'm stll confused and like bern and iv asked many times before
we put £10 in and achieve exactly what?
On the house of lords, just because one party does things thats no reason for everyone else to do same.
I don't agree with labour doing it any more than the tories or lib dems
but mr cameron bases his partyon fairness and heres his opportunity to break with what parties normally do, and say ok there wll be a balanced house of lords
and no party can put in friends because they are born into dosh, or have helped
the party financially.
On the H.O.C. reduce by all means, but be faitr about boundary changes
not helping one party stay in control, which is what mr cameron wants.
Fairness, thats all!!!!!,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

12:1677673Fairness is simply unworkable, frankly. The Port is a business and needs businesspeople to make it viable. An element of co-operation and inclusion can be worked into it, and that appears to be happening, but - God forgive me! - it would be like asking the Unions to run the company. Madness.

12:4877679Perhaps, Keith - but it's a bit like the inappropriate use of Uni places. Not about better or worse, just about most appropriate for the task.

16:5377707And what about the point the blues said that we would get to vote on the port?
31 October 2010
18:2777721Unions can (and do) play a vital role without expecting to run the show..........if I had been let loose on a management role when I was a union rep it would have been disastrous, but I bet I wouldn't have admitted it at the time!!! Horses for courses and the most appropriate person for the task/role.

19:3277725Indeed, but many seem to think they could do better and miss the point.
