got my letter through this morning, confusingly it starts with "application for share in the trust for £.10".
my understanding was that the £.10 was a donation towards costs only.

Why confusing?
Simple really.
This is £10 to be a member. Yes it is a 'donation to costs' but that does not preclude membership. No conflict.
I have not seen anything yet.
I look forward to getting mine.

not simple at all barry, there is a vast difference between being a shareholder or a member of the organisation.
the front page is a share application, the back page uses the word "shareholder" 8 times.

Sorry Howard do not see what the problem is
This is a Provident and Industrial Society of which you become a member by buying a share, everyone is entitled to 1 share in the society irrespective of the size of the donation they wish to make above the minimum for the share.

ross
the 55000 mail shot has just gone out to everyone, most would not be aware of
the terminology of the financial world.
most will see a share as a possible investment.
But it is an investment in a local asset that gives the opportunity to interact with it.

Indeed it is
However it is less than 40 cigarettes, or about 3 pints of beer and gives one a chance to have a say in the future

The problem is, this provident and industrial society doesn't run the Port.
A bit like purchasing an empty packet of wheetabix.

But it will own and be responsible for the port, day to day operational responsibility will be given to a subsidiary company with the right knowledge and expertise to do so.

Ross, I do suppose that the letter being sent out to 5,500 addresses does not claim that this provident society will own the Port, as it could have legal consequences if it did.
It could either mean having inside information and using it to gain financial or other interests in an unfair manner, or, leading people to believe something that has not at all been decided by the competent ministry so as to get them to pay up money.
