Interesting article in today's Mercury re above. There was no need for the DTC to employ consultants re the video of the Mayor. The matter went to DDC monitoring officer and the results should have been published. When I was on DDC any adverse publicity and you were on your own.If a complaint against you was put the Monitoring Officer was involved.
At the very least The Mayor should have paid for the consultants not the rate payers.I cannot believe that this went unchecked. What were the Councillors thinking of .When some people struggle to pay their way.

From the Captain's link...."The firm handled the publication of a scandalous video showing Mayor Neil Rix snorting a white substance, which thrust Dover into the national spotlight."
What a waste of money that was, they did nothing to improve the image of Dover or even the Mayor after that disgusting picture was splashed all over the media.
Another report here.......

For a Public Relations business, Edwards Harvey seem very reticent to engage with the public by not answering questions asked of them.

Too much feudal, Machiavellian kow-towing goes on in Dover and holds it back.
Let's move into the 21st century.

There would have been an even bigger uproar if the money had been spent on highlighting all the very good unpublicised works of the Mayor( the elder residents of Dover for example in tandem with my wife) instead of what they did do.
The photo of the Mayor bought Dover to the attention of those who would never give Dover a second thought and as they say ' there is no such thing as bad publicity only publicity ' and it didn't cost Dover a penny .
The longer people highlight the issue the more publicity Dover will get and the more I will defend the Mayor for an alleged incident that happened in the distant past when in the Mayor's wildest dreams he would not have envisaged holding the position he does, one I might add that he carries out with enormous dignity.

Just a few points Ken.
▪it would not cost a penny to give a story to the Express or mercury"highlighting all the very good unpublicised works of the Mayor"
▪The video of our Mayor snorting a substance most likely cocaine is only ever going to create bad publicity, this isn't Hollywood!
▪There is no allegation it's on film.
▪He was a councillor, nothing wild about imagining he might be Mayor one day.
▪If Neil Rix had any dignity he would have stood down as Mayor the moment that video became public.
Aside that what are all these great deeds he has carried out this past year? I have asked on this thread a few times and nobody as yet has given any examples, what's the big secret?

In answer Reginald
His support of the elderly of Dover will be highlighted at 'Mayormaking' where he has my wife Karen( Chief Officer of Age UK Riverside) to speak and offer hopefully his financial support.
Publicity is fleeting. How many people remember the name and city of the mayor previously accused of taking drugs?
The allegation is in reference to the substance involved not the fact it was on film.
The incident occurred in the Mayor's words many years ago before he became a Councillor, and I have no reason to doubt him.
I use the noun dignity as in ' bearing in high office' as `opposed to other meanings.
One good deed he has made was to fund the Christmas Day lunches along with other Councillors from their allocated budgets for the elderly alone on that day.
He had previously several years ago at considerable private expense to himself transferred the huge wooden sculpture from The Discovery Centre to Green Park school to avoid it being lost to Dover.
I know of several other instances where the Mayor has shown compassion but as I have no way of contacting him it would be wrong of me to make them public without his permission.

The previous Mayor gave a weekly account of all visits he had made, highlighting the charities, voluntary groups etc. This is how such groups attract funding and/or more volunteers. Sorry to say this but during his current term of office only Harbour Board visits and the odd black tie dinner spring to mind although I would be happy to concede if I have simply missed things.

Sorry but I agree with Reginald and Howard on this.
Regarding the mayor supporting the elderly so do all the volunteers at Riverside and the Age Concern shop, without that shop the Riverside Centre could/would be in financial trouble. I do not remember ever hearing his name mentioned when I was a volunteer unlike Sue Nicholas who was often talked about along with a couple of other people on the committee.
As for Ken's publicity comment negative publicity might raise the profile but I would prefer not to have Dover highlighted in the media for possibly having a drug taking mayor regardless of when the supposed incident happened. Not once did I hear or read about the historical side or anything else that is good about Dover
The only good thing I can think of regarding the mayor is that he obviously has very loyal friends.

Jan, the support of the shop and all the volunteers has always been very much appreciated and always will be, but new supporters of which the Mayor is one are also most welcome. As to friends, they are meant to be loyal. I should point out I am a supporter of the Mayor and Dover Town Council and the Town of Dover.

Thinking of past Mayors not every one can help financially, but worked their socks of of Suporting the Town.Lets not get back to the days when only money people became Mayors. No doubt many of the people who post on here will not be at Mayor Making as its an invitation only event .So we will not hear about the Mayors involvement with Age Concern.I recall one Christmad going down To ,Age Concern although I was on my way to a family event.
In all fairness Ken you worked hard as Mayor. We were present when the Queen visited the Bronze Age Boat.

Thank you Sue for your kind comments, being Mayor can be quite challenging when you have a full time job as I did.

It's fair to say as I told Cllr Rix when he was running past mayors down, everyone takes on the role in different ways .
I'm with Jan the bad publicity is what Dover will be remembered for over the 2 years other mayors have stood down for far less
but we are where we are
The Tory/Independent administration will have to attempt to justify it over the coming year.

Update on the former cocaine snorting alleged mayor.
Dover Mayor has dropped a further 2 places in Google search results; down to 5th but holding strong.
