So far I'v been lobbied by C Precious who wants to do a deal with Labour
Cllr Rix
I'm hearing that Cllr Wanstal wants to throw his hat in the ring.
We could also see Roger Walkden stand
Could be quite a bun fight
It all appears very unedifying. Let's be honest, regardless of personal preference the Mayor doesn't make a jot of difference.
I like Neil, I like Chris, I'm sure like everybody else they've carried out the role the best they can, but the vast majority of people in Dover won't have a clue who the Mayor is.

Having seen photos of Cllr Wanstall at a Remembrance wreath laying, I most certainly hope he does not ever hold a position where he can cause further embarrassment to this town and insults to Veterans. I heard from a lady I spoke with that 1 excuse given by the town clerk was that there is no dress code for Cllrs. Well, seeing the dress code and general appearance of some cllrs that is no surprise and surely personal pride should step in once this position, asked for prior to being elected, as mayor carries with itself a certain code of appearance. But the question then is, why spend tax payers money on "uniforms" for those representatives? I was asked a few questions by another dog walker to which I had no reply so maybe somebody here could furnish me with an answer ; -Does the job of mayor result in a pension at the end of the year's term? I assume a pre requisite must be a clean police record? If a mayor decides to use a taxi for personal reasons, rather than the leased car provided ( for which we pay) do we as taxpayers still foot the bill? Does the Mayor get a clothing allowance? Who pays for any expenses incurred by the wife/ partner /family of the Mayor if they accompany the Mayor on official engagements?

Anne
I don't know the full ins and outs of the council only been there since Oct, but my understanding is the Mayor has an allowance for each year.
On dress code in general, although there isn't one it's down to each individual to a Point I would say I would judge cllrs on there ward/Dover work rather than how they dress.
There is no pension.

Re post. 49,Keith has answered the question re pensions.I have attended events with the current Deputy Mayor,,if the Mayor is on an engagement he has the official car.His deputy has to go on a bus or if a late event use a taxi.I understand the Mayors driver is not full time.
Keith is correct people appreciate the. Work you do in your ward.During the last few years of my Council Service like the Mayor I had an allowance. This helped with clothes etc .When you are presented to Royalty a certain code of dress is expected.
My early years on the Council I had to pay got my child to b looked after I was out of pocket for years..

Re: #49
Anna If the image of cllr Wanstall is the dressing gown one, you should know he was not attending the rememberance service, the service had duly finished and all but a few stragglers chating and networking remained, he came to apologise regarding the flag and his not being well. Unfortunately for him the wrong people remained and jumped on it as a clear and deliberate insult to the rememerance service, it wasn't and nobody was upset barring cllr Wanstall at the vitriol thrown at him.
Re: my previous comment on my shame Anna, I merely refer to the military's sense of humour and its ability to laugh at itself and make light of the worst imaginable situations being one of the main facets of what binds the military family.

Reg you are correct re Cllr Wanstall was unwell, and those who made unfair comments really upset him.In Public life too many people are to eager to make unkind remarks.

To further reply, i may not agree with Cllr Wanstall's politics but it takes all sorts to make up a council.
What should be remembered is he stood in a ward that usually returns conservative cllrs a rock solid ward for them, but Cllr Wanstall overturned this and was voted in by the Castle ward residents

There is an old adage that we get the politicians we deserve; if that is true what does it say about the electorate in some of our wards?

An old adage is not necessarily a correct adage Ross. Dovorians have been indoctrinated over the years to settle for less every election. I take it you have heard about the frog and boiling water? Put him in very hot water, he jumps out. But put him in cold water gradually heated, he will stay in there and get boiled.

I have to admit we did have a couple of new names in my ward last time but one was a known racist so was discounted by a huge number of voters thank goodness.
In some cases it is safer to vote for those that are a known even if you would rather have someone new.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Jan I understand that Personally I would vote for an active person in the ward if there just turning up election time living miles away there unlikely to be much good for ward.

David I have no intention of naming the person on here but one only had to read the comments they made to know they are racist.

I'm sorry Jan that is so unfair, now every candidate that stood in your ward has potentially been labelled a racist. I don't know which ward you're in but to make such an allegation without backing it up is plain wrong.
