The bid to fund this site was submitted to government bySE Local Enterprise Partnership prior to Xmas. At the same time funding was put in for A20 roundabout changes. Bids were given Number one & two priorities by Kent & Medway LEP.

I do not think they can build a site that big to stop the stack just to many of them your site could take 500 lorrys but the stack would still happen, there must be a way found to get them across,Two ways to doing that(1) build a road tunnel that is the best way.or open up more ports like I said Ramsgate and keep Ferry link working in Dover.

Westenhanger seems as good as anywhere and something certainly needs to be done but nowhere will want to have a large lorry park on their doorstep, look at the complaints when Whitfield was suggested.

Ramsgate as stated is a non starter for so many reasons, Someone needs to bite the bullet and tarmac a huge parking area that can accommodate a thousand HGVs and be opened with minimum fuss at short notice, if or when there is a fire further into the tunnel it will be out of service for a very long time. It must be planned for.

The point about Whitfield being one of the designated areas did not take into account one already existed at the Port Zone, Lydden Hill & even within the Port on the Western side. None of which reached capacity. As the KCC solution was a pay lorry park, there appeared no logic in putting another one in when the existing ones were never full, drivers resisted paying but more fundamentally KCC did not know the lorry parks existed!!

Paul any lorry park that charges is not an option for many drivers. The usual charge is about £25 per night and as most East European drivers are only paid whilst the wheels are turning, this equates to about 40% of their daily pay.
No one has yet mentioned another reason for the delays is that ferries are also'stacked' in an attempt to get into either Calais or Dover, so perhaps Ramsgate is an option, it certainly has the infrastructure to access their port.
I do speak with first hand experience of 'stack' and this evening will be trying to get to Jerez by way of Calais and like many freight drivers I have a timed critical delivery, so any delay creates problems for customer.

Goldtops good to hear from you.
I think that's basically the point I'm making Ken.
They don't/won't use the existing facilities. Paul Carter & co just don't get it.
It's also been noted that during Stack ferries were leaving without full freight loads because of the poor & chaotic traffic management & sometimes lack of it.

Surely it's time to recognise that the M20/M2/Channel Tunnel/Port of Dover complex is a national infrastructure that is no longer fit for purpose and needs to be sorted asap, otherwise the disadvantages will be greater than any advantages created by e.g. HS2 or even a new runway for the south east.
It's not a problem to be solved at district or county level - maybe when the queues reach the M25 we'll see some action.

Kent Police have really got to get a grip with how to properly manage the traffic problems that this area suffers far to often, rather than ignore it and hope it will go away.
Maybe it is time the lorry drivers themselves to protest like they did about the fuel tax problems a few years ago.

Thank you Mr Tranter Ramsgate is needed but it is only the two of us that can see it.Parking of that amount of lorry,s is a no go ,as I said you could not build one that big you have to keep the lorrys on the move not parked up.

I suspect Morrisons and Asda will have been busier the last week or two, trying to get back from Tesco recently was awful. In fact I've postponed my shopping trip today after news on Radio Kent.
While the A20 is the main issue, other routes into Dover like Whitfield Hill and Melbourne Avenue are getting jammed because we're avoiding Jubilee Way. Why can't the uphill overtaking lane on Jubilee Way be designated as car-only downhill temporarily during Op. Stack. Am I missing something?

As stated by Ray this road is a very important part of the national infrastructure and where vast amounts of this countries exports travel to Europe and lots of it is time sensitive ie food etc. All of the MPs along the M20 route are I believe Conservative so surely they should have direct access to government, but then when I was a councillor I approached the then transport secretary(MP for Thanet South) at a Labour party meeting offering him first hand experience of the local transport problems. His response was to tell me he had experts advising him and he had no need of a mere truck driver. I still drive professionally and he lost his position when Gordon Brown became PM, Karma.
