Manston is a large empty plot of land but it is a long way from the M20 so is not really practical, that is apart from the poor access roads to the area.

I cannot see how this can work in practice as hauliers will be told to go there thus adding to their costs and then expected to pay for parking that they didn't ask for. Eastern European drivers simply won't have that sort of money with them.
Another feature is the 3 month contract when it is expected that once the holiday season tails off in a month stack will not be needed.

At least the traffic will be moving and roads not closed or car parks. Better they are somewhere of the roads and if the cost of renting manston is cheaper than all the policing and inconvenience to people. Cant see how the hauliers will have to pay for parking.

I cannot see the owners of Manston renting out cheap when they know it could be a licence to print money, if the hauliers don't pay then the council tax payers will pick up the bill.

At the weekend Ebbsfleet was announced as the venue for a 1000 trucks, suddenly all cancelled and Manston is now front runner. No doubt there will be a few more final decisions yet.

I do not remember any area being announced only the numerous suggestions.
I have always thought it would be a good idea to stop as many lorries as possible from actually entering Kent in other words before they reach the M25 or Dartford crossing.

The stockbrokers are all safe and will be able to get to their homes in West Kent, hooray!!! A leaked press release obtained by the BBC announces Manston as the solution for everyone in West Kent.

Here it is Jan.
The news of Manston's role follows the announcement by the roads minister Andrew Jones on Friday that Ebsfleet International Station in north Kent was to be brought into the equation and used to provide spaces for as many as 1,000 HGVs
Re; Manston
The UKIP council in Thanet will fight tooth and nail to stop Manston Airport being used due to the traffic nightmare that would ensue, this only days after they were talking about attracting ferry operators to Ramsgate in order to move vast numbers of trucks across to the continent.

Still think the best place is off the M20/A2070 right next to the Ashford Truck Stop - huge area - perfect location

MANSTON Airport in Thanet will be used to ease the strain of traffic in Kent when Operation Stack is implemented on the M20.
This will mean lorries heading towards Dover and Folkestone will park at the disused airport 25 miles away.
The news comes after Operation Stack was implemented six weeks in a row causing mass delays for Kent motorists.
Dover District Councillor Nigel Collor said: "This is a ludicrous idea as it is simply shoving an existing problem into East Kent where the roads are not suitable."

The thing is Brian Manston will only be used once the M20 is full to bursting, not sure about the A20.

Only good if they open the port of Ramsgate again and that is what they should do.

They can open the port if they want, no point as not one ferry operator has shown an interest in running from there. The last one that tried went bust costing Thanet council tax payers a fair amount of money.

The statistics Neil gave on the current ferries showed most of them are too big to fit in there, and smaller ones wouldn't be economical.
The traffic would be a nightmare too, either for Operation Stack overload or the port - things have changed tremendously in the last couple of years with the ever increasing retail parks around Westwood - I drove around there on Tuesday afternoon and it was crawling all the way until the new Pegwell bypass.

The port of Ramsgate is not now and has not been closed to Ro-Ro ferry operators. It is open and ready for business, it just does not have any customers who want to operate ferry services from its facilities. It is an utter fallacy to imply that the port of Ramsgate is closed, or has been closed at some point, by calling for it to be opened.
The Port of Ramsgate is OPEN already.
Just in case there is any doubt as to its status as 'OPEN' here is a link to their page as they try to attract customers.
http://www.portoframsgate.co.uk/our-port/about-the-port/
Ramsgate being open is not the issue anyway - open or closed it lacks the available water depth and berth lengths at all states of the tide to accommodate the vast majority of vessels currently deployed on the short sea cross channel routes and smaller vessels cannot operate profitably out of Ramsgate due to a number of reasons, longer sailing times and the price of the extra low sulphur fuel oil that they now have to burn to comply with IMO Sulphur Emission Control Area (Channel and North Sea) rules being just two of them.
