19:1192416should we be thanking anyone?
if jacobs get their way there will be next to none safety barriers, they want it done in the next month and a half otherwise it goes onto next years budget, which is much lower.
may be a good time to expand bucklands minor injuries unit and make it a full a & e.

19:3192425I agree Alec, and so does Nigel. But he does not run Kent Highways and can only put up a fight, as one of the local county members. This is a case of 'use it or lose it' with a budget comprised of OUR MONEY which is only going to be spent because it is available for spending. Another case of the council officer tail wagging the elected member dog. Unfortunately this concept is so ingrained in local government culture that it will be difficult to root out.

19:5292430You are right Howard I brought it to the attention of Forumites but that is my Job,the answer is easy,we don't want you pulling up all these barriers and we will fight until they listen,as I said there are some that are not doing any good, but lots are protecting pedestrians and they must stay.Officers take note and on thursday I know they will hear a cross-party agreement of clear off in so many words.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

20:0592432Once again a cross-party consensus which could have been achieved much earlier if the opening post had not been party-political in nature. Both sides are guilty of this tendency to throw stones and regard facts as inconvenient distractions.

20:0792433will that make any difference john, the final decision rests with the maidstone politburo?
when i raise the issue with people nobody seems to know of the plans so there s no consensus of opinion.
it was only when you raised the issue on here that it got an airing.

21:3592445That is what I was trying to do.raise the issue otherwise no one would have known about it,Peter I am a politiann granted only a little one compared to Nigel but he chose not to bring it to here or the newspapers, and it would have been smuggled in without anyone's or very few people's knowledge.
If I got political it is because I am,and I do defend that right,on lots of things Nigel and the Tories and Me and the Labourites agree. But I do not like things that are open for consultation and no one is told or asked it is usually a shame consultation.

22:0692451John Methinks thou dost protest too much. You are right that these things are brought up and examined in public. My point in 123 and 125 is that the real essence of local democracy is lost in political infighting between members while the sovietised officers carry on blithely as if the world had not changed.

08:1192463I wasn't political posturing John.
Just bringing to your and other's attention, that Nigel was walking round all the sites where the railing are, making notes about them and contacting KCC about the need, the absolute need, for this to come before the JTB, at the same time as it was been written about and discussed on here.
He has brought KKC members and officers, as well as people from Jacobs down to Dover and discussed with them the safety issues and the need or not to remove certain barriers.
This coming Thursday is that JTB meeting. Nigel fights for Dover not (just) the Conservative party.

11:0192473Regardless of who did or did not do what, remember the May elections are coming it is time for electioneering.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

11:2592478This is, then, the ideal time to enable local reps to work that bit harder for us, and to let us know what they are doing. Come on chaps, get emailing!! Don't waste the opportunity!!

12:1892481Just an update and a few points clafified:
I was onto this before it appeared on this forum - action first - talk later.
Nobody pressed me into doing anything (I don't need pressing to do anything as those of you who know me will appreciate). As I was one of the first to see the suggestions I walked the town looking at all 18 sites constructively the following day. Railings are not always the best solution as there are numerous possibilities to address road safety.
During the first few days I also met with the Director of Highways and the Cabinet Member at KCC and received assurance that the issue would go to the Dover Joint Transportation Board for discussion - since then I have been advised that it will be on the agenda for the April meeting.
I have now walked the sites again this time with Kent Highway Services and their consultants, Jacobs, and the report to the JTB will have a few different ideas but this will hopefully fully be discussed fully at the JTB and each site dealt with separately.
I also have some assurances from KCC/Jacobs.
Regarding the forthcoming election - there may be one coming but your representatatives still have a duty to represent you - my way is act and then talk when there is something to tell.

13:5792491Keep it up Nigel, I will back any councillor who gets things done. Railings are there to keep people off the road, they will not protect you from a 40 ton truck or even a speeding car. In fact in some cases they may even prevent you from jumping to safety.

15:3292499the dents in some of the railings suggests that they are dong a job of protecting pedestrians.

13:5593893thanks for info john, seems like the railings will stay after all.
the intention was for the work to be done in this financial year, i doubt that there will be funds available for this project in the next financial year.

07:3193970It wasn't going to be brought before the JTB to decide at one time, just done, now it is to be discussed and decided by us locally.
