I believe that saying UKIP has had its day is premature. We'll have to see what voting reforms come out of this parliament; if some form of PR is the outcome, then all the minority parties will be dancing for joy as it will be the culmination of all their aspirations - the PR system is why UKIP has MEPs but no MPs and a few other minority British MEPs exist as well.
Whether you're for PR as it is seen to be more democratic, or whether you're against it because it reduces strong government, the fact is that we are moving inexorably towards reform of the voting system. Only if the first past the post system is retained in its current form is UKIP doomed; Lord Pearson said exactly that when he visited Dover in April. If PR is introduced, then I believe Sid and Barry have spoken too soon.

Charlie sincerely is against selling Dover's ports, and British assets in general such as ports, but he also clearly stated - also in his letter in the East Kent mercury this week - that he cannot assure us that the Port of Dover will not be sold, as his party has made no promise that it will not be sold!

Royal port?

That is what I said.
Sorry Vic, I didn't mean to be obtuse. It's just that I've not heard the term in reference to Dover before. Does the granting of a royal charter actually mean Dover is a royal port? If so, why haven't we maximised the tourism potenital of renaming ourselves Royal Dover or Dover Regis?

i think vic is referring to the charter.
Yeah, but does the issuing of a Royal Charter, make a port a Royal port? Anyone know?

Dover has certainly had very extensive Royal connections through the ages, indeed Dover Harbour Board saw fit to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Royal Charter by publishing a book entitled "Dover Harbour - Royal Gateway" by Derek Leach.
Unfortunately, giving any institution the appelation "Royal" appears to be at the somewhat random whim of the monarch of the day and the only harbour to be honoured in this way is our neighbour Ramsgate.
"In 1820, King George IV embarked, with the Royal Squadron, at Ramsgate on his way to Hanover. In appreciation of the hospitality he received, he decreed that Ramsgate Harbour should have the right to add 'Royal' to its name. This status of Royal Harbour is unique in mainland Britain."

Ok I have now found out,you can do the same by loging into is Dover a royal port.
After Queen Elizabeth (1)had thought it necessary to encourage this Town of Dover and the port, this was done by bestowing on it a mark of her Royal Favour a new charter of incorporation and had the port taken under her Royal Protection by doing that the port of Dover was made a royal port and all repairs and up keep of the port was done on her orders.

I wonder what happened to the representations that were sent to the secratary of State for transport? I also sent one, after being informed by the Cinque Ports of the possibility to do so and given the address.
However, I still have the copies of my representaion and of the reply i received from London, so, no!, DHB won't be selling our Port, and if they try going ahead, I will confront them in a Court case with it, for tampering around with legal procedures!

I think the Forum Fuhrer has spoken about keeping local, Barry. Neither Windsor, London SW1, Balmoral, Sandringham, nor the kebab shop at Victoria Station count as local. Ergo, she and Phil ain't members. One assumes.

Still awaiting that lunch date Colin.... besides I have met Bern anyway and Lizzy can give her a few decades!
Andy - but do you really think PaulB would say no to Buck House (that knighthood promise perhaps!), you never know PaulB could well be in on the secret
