Live exports in the news again after an incident at Ramsgate involving the death of some sheep. When I read the article I was quite shocked. Are companies care free when transporting animals?
Howard maybe you could help me with a link here I cannot seem copy it with my phone!

A simple common sense change in the law is required so that the only live farm animals that can be exported are for breeding purposes those destined for food are sent frozen or chilled.

There is nothing evil about the trade as such, but no-one should be allowed to get away with such appalling treatment of animals as this. I hope those responsible get the book thrown at them.

There is absolutely no need to export live animals. The sooner it ends the better for all.

Perhaps now that people 'have proof' (as if they needed any) of this suffering something will be done. No need at all for it.

This one from Laura Sandys local MP there...who has campaigned against live animal exports...
* *
TWO ANIMALS HAVE TO DIE DUE TO NEGLECT DURING TRANSPORTION TO RAMSGATE PORT:
LIVE ANIMAL EXPORT TRADE MUST STOP
I am appalled to hear about the disgusting treatment of animals from the Port of Ramsgate today. I understand from reports that two animals have had to be put down due to injury during transportation from Northamptonshire to Ramsgate. This is totally unacceptable and I have taken this up with the Minister and secured a meeting with him for tomorrow.
I will bring up our grave concerns about this trade in general but our great shock at this particular event. This is the second time a transportation from Northamptonshire has been investigated by Animal Welfare.

Ho-hum.
I recall all the angst at the livestock cull over Foot and Mouth. It does appear to this Vegetarian a little OTT. The issue must surely have been one of 'untimely' slaughter.
But is there not also an issue over livestock imports? As I understand the EU regulations;for the text on the pack on the shelf to be able to state, British 'meat' the livestock in question need only have spent the last few weeks of life in the UK.
If you wish "Death for dinner" and cheap too, why fret? Your mobile-phone is cheap, the clothes you wear are cheap...is such manufacture an ever cheerful process?

I see no need for the export/import of live animals
If they are intended for the table they can be slaughtered here and the carcasses can be transported either refrigerated or frozen.
If they are breeding stock then either eggs or sperm can be transported much more easily and artificial insemination is a standard agricultural technique that has been practised for a long time.
As for horses, I appreciate that they are generally treated much better than general farm livestock, but again fail to see why they need to be transported

"With the sheer number of shipments of live animals across the globe every day, it is impossible to know the number of them who die in transit but it is certain to be higher than the incidents we hear of. "

i am sure a lot of bad news stuff in this trade is kept under wraps, much better to ban both exports/imports of live animals full stop.
i was listening to a farmer talking about the short distance the animals travel which is disingenuous, there are only 3 ferries a day ramsgate to ostend with a crossing time of four and a half hours.
taking into account the travelling to the port, formalities both sides and the onward journey to slaughter, the whole thing is barbaric.
