I regularly use Golf rd in Deal which takes you through to Sandwich which is used regularly by cyclists. The road is narrow with passing places here n there and whilst most of them are quite ok there are some that really have a chip on their shoulder and are just rude and arrogant and will purposely hog the middle of the road so you just cannot pass even when theres plenty of room to do so.I often wonder that if cycling makes them so miserable then why bother?

We often walk the dog along Golf Road to return from Sandwich Bay after walking up the coast path from Sandown Road. I have to say the cyclists are always friendly to walkers, it’s the motorists who often seem rude and inconsiderate to pedestrians.

Im sure most cyclists are happy and friendly
But I do come across quite a high number that are rude , cycle on pavements at speed and a general nuisance

Of course the speed limit on Golf Road is 20mph I believe, most cyclists can manage that speed on the flat so the advantage to be gained by overtaking is negligible.

I,m not talking of overtaking when i refere to passing,i,m well aware of the limits on that road as a regular user.I,m talking of a few i,ve experienced that will ride straight head on towards you when there is quite sufficent room to pass and shout to "get out of the f****** way"or similar, those are types i mean. The vast majority are great.Good n bad cyclists and motorists.

If they persistently ride head on towards oncoming vehicles, I suggest leaving it up to the principles discovered by Charles Darwin. Today most of the cyclists on Golf Road were of pension age and none of them rode at me.

Times/priorities change, I guess. Getting on for 60 years ago, one of our local coppers caught me riding on the pavement on my tricycle (which had a boot, ideal for collecting beer bottles to claim the deposit on) and gave me suitable advice - to ride on the adjacent 3-lane A432. The good news is, my parents weren't told (which would've resulted in a 'I'm very disappointed in you').
(Not my real name.)

You,re right, most were pensioners today and no probs on Golf rd but i can asure you that i,ve had the situation of being riden at head on more than one occassion in case you doubt what i say.I use that rd sometimes 2-3 times a day.As i say theres good n bad cyclists and motorists but there are some cyclists that have a real problem with anything that has an engine.

The amount of grown ups cycling/scootering on the pavements and in the precincts through town these days is ridiculous. I mean kids I can understand. Just grow up. Or take a back road if you don't like traffic. Plenty of quieter back routes to get you pretty much anywhere in Dover. Not to mention designated cycle routes.
See also riding on the road but against traffic.
