Reduce the two lane system around the town to make one lane bike and bus only thereby restricting car speeds and making public transport more attractive as it would become the fastest way around town. Reduce fares from surrounding areas to encourage car drivers/passengers to use the buses............Blast, the nurse has spotted me out of bed again! Back to the comfy room

the fares are very high around here but most people from the age of 30 upwards seem to have free passes meant for disabled and over 60's.
i have no idea where they get them from.
another drawback is that although daytime bus services are excellent, evening and sunday services are chronic.

Thank you Roger, the path looks a lot better now, I still wonder what the cyclists will do when they get to the carpark exit, stay on the narrow pavement and curse pedestrians in their way I suppose.

Good one today,I was going to the Town Council Offices crossing over from Dour St by the Police Station and stepped off the pavement by the Town Hall car park,to be nearly flattened by a Cyclist, who screamed at me 'Don't you look at where you are going' and he was right. But I knew what he was going to do next so I chased after him to see him disappearing round the corner thru the people in the walk way to the Tourist Office.
Not having my running shoes on I continued the chase telling him he had now broken the By-law and could I have his name and address I recieved the middle finger as he rode thru the traffic and up Effingham Crescent.
Thinking back he was not only a big bloke in his 30's but he looked quite fit as well, but as he was heading for the Station I may not have seen the last of him.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

The new cycle path is there but what did I see outside the shop at lunchtime but a cyclist on the pavement going against the traffic flow looking daggers at the pedestrians in his way. No excuse for this just laziness and ignorance and nobody in authority around.

this one went along the pavement at breakneck speed, thankfully the elderly lady pictured was too slow to get knocked down, the cyclist passed oblivious of how close he came to bowling her over.

such a beautiful morning thought i would take a short walk along the seafront.
no escape there from rogue cyclists.

There's no escape anywhere from them Howard; the trouble is that no one (official) tells them they cannot cycle in those places.
Can you imagine the verbal abuse a member of the public would get if they said they mustn't cycle there ?
We need them to be told by the Police and the PCSOs, even if they cannot fine them (yet).

the system is being abused, certain levels of disability qualify.
a young woman late twenties has one because she has diabetes(the lesser one).

There is no lesser one Howard, Type 1 and 2 are dangerous if not controlled properly. It's only a view by non-diabetics that type 2 is less dangerous.

the issue is mobility, the young woman in question moves like a tornado carrying shopping bags.
maybe one of our councillors could explain the criteria?

Is there a problem with the cyclists shown in the photos on the esplanade?
They seem to have nothing but empty space in all directions.

Ed,
Maybe it's that the cycle path set aside just for them is part of that empty space!
Agree though, it doesn't appear to be a problem in those pics, but would be on a busy weekend - question is where does the cutoff come in, different people would have different views on that.

True, Ray. Nevertheless, I think we need to cut cyclists a bit of rope. Anybody cycling on the roads in Dover is taking their lives in their hands. They are being passed by endless streams of trucks a matter of inches away and it is only a matter of time before they get mashed into the tarmac. I wonder how many cyclists lives have been saved already by them taking to the pavements? Also, every person riding a bike is one less person driving a car with all the damage that has the potential to cause.
It is swings and roundabouts, and we are only hearing one side of the story here. The last time I rode a bike was umpteen years ago when I came to a sudden rather painful halt when the front wheel abruptly parked itself in a drain cover in the Eastern Docks. I have no desire to repeat the experiment, particularly since I live on top of a hill! Nevertheless, I feel that every effort should be made to encourage people to cycle wherever possible (other people, not me!).

i have been struck twice by cyclists when walking along a pavement in the last couple of years, with many near misses.
the second collision gives me absolute gip from my knee first thing in the morning, others have have had far worse.
basically roads are for motor vehicles, pedestrians for pavements and cycle lanes for cyclists.

The seafront cycle path seems to have been eaten up by the new development, OK on quiet day but downright dangerous when busy.

I am partly with Howard on this one.
Pavements and pedestrian precincts are just that. they were meant for pedestrians. We now have to endure not only cyclists but also fast invalid scooters who all to often ignore us pedestrians and expect us to get out of their way.
I am not saying either should use the road but to remember that they are 'invading' for want of a better word our space not the other way round.
