The Heights are in desperate need of investment and despite what volunteers can achieve the decline is accelerating as time goes on in in my time of being involved.....
I was at the Drop Redoubt recently and the Roman 'Bredenstone' remains are falling apart more than ever after the extreme weather over the last year. It may only be a random lump of masonery but it is 2000 years old and as historic as the Heights themself, though it isn't as simple as bung a bit of mortar on it to stick it together and will probably be a costly job for English Heritage with specialist conservation skills required
Bricks are falling from the walls and there was a lot of mortar washed out of the pointing. Trees and buddleia growing from the walls is getting worse, drainage gullys are totally blocked up and water is pouring through the heritage.
And this the Drop Redoubt that is a "good" bit, but how long will it be safe to let people in and show them around? Cross the road to the North Centre and Detached Bastions and things are even worse!!
I am really struggling to know what the answer is. Where will the millions come from? EH and DDC don't have it. No-one has the match funding available to apply for Heritage Lottery funding.
I am sure there is no-one here (maybe Alexander only?) that wants the Heights just to be forgotten about, the potential ignored and nature just to take over ??
Maybe some "out of the box" thinking is what is needed, just look at the what some other forts have done/are doing. Is it a bad thing? They are still keeping their historic status, take a look:

Fort Nelson in Portsmouth recently hacked a big hole on the ground to great an amazing new visitor centre and kept it's scheduled/listed status

Over the water in Ostend Fort Napoleon has rather modern additions that somehow don't detract from the historic environment but still work
