Disagree on Deal Pier. I got rid of chancer running cafe. Owed +£30,ooo to council. Went as far as High Court. Legal officer at DDC left under a bit of a cloud! Interviewed present cafe owners ( some wanted greasy spoon FFS). Got £500,o00 investment to resurface and get Co who totally screwed it up to redo.
Best thing I did whilst on DDC. (though didn't make song and dance about it).
You ain't seen nothing yet?

Well, having made it back to the UK, I called into St James's before driving back round past the new square.
It was quite funny to see the "mist" of water that was ahead of me! Did anyone do "computer modelling" about the wind that whistles around the square?
With a hosepipe ban in place, I might park my car down there for ten minutes and take a sponge!

I hope the electrics are waterproofed against all that spray!

I was surprised how much mist was coming out today,at times the market square was like a thick fog,i wondered if its developed a fault or its been turned up too high.

It may well be latter, but it also depends on ambient temperature, the hotter it is the faster the mist evaporates...
My concern is the lack of enforcement in the loading bays, which are being used as parking areas particularly by KFC customers & the staff from Aspendos, this means trucks have nowhere to pull in to make deliveries. Having designated these areas as loading/unloading for commercial vehicles the council need to police them much better. Additionally, they are currently failing to stop vehicles cutting through to Pencester Road despite it being a designated pedestrian area...

May be better to see a pedestrianised area around there and enforcement

Never say I don't give things a chance!
So I go over to inspect the squirty thing, which apparently makes Dovorians look like extras in Gorillas in the Mist, to find it switched OFF.
Because the stage has been erected immediately next to the squirty thing, on which various acts will be celebrating the same, and they need electricity, it would be dangerous to have the squirty thing on in case all the celebrants get electrocuted.
A bit like going to a christening to find there's no child present?
Off for lunch at the Yacht Club where a member informs me that according to an article in the Dover Society magazine, to ensure the mist from the squirty thing is clean enough (worries about all the rough sleepers in doorways getting legionnaires disease) the 'feature' is going to cost £150k+ a year to run. Surely this cant be true? Ross?

As I understand it from the guys who actually built it the misters
a) use very little water as it is a fine mist
b) it is fed direct off the mains
c) the only treatment is a high end filter to remove calcium salts to prevent the nozzles furring up.
d) because the mist is potable water from the mains there is NO RISK of legionella
I find it almost impossible to believe that the filters will cost £150k p.a. but wouldn't put it past DDC to have failed to read the small print on the maintenance contract and entered into a very expensive agreement (less than £150k but still stupidly over priced).

Dover Society article suggests it will be running 24hours a per day at 420 litres an hour, someone has added their back of fag packet £150k calculations to this. I see no reason why a feature straight off of the mains would need to run 24/7, you don't get legionella if you go on holiday and don't run your taps for a couple of week !

It is on a timer set to come on at 10am & switch off at 10pm (I think), though this can be overridden by DDC staff in the VIC/Museum who have access to the control app.

£150,000 to run? *If* true, I'm sure we can all afford to pay the extra council tax.
Fed off the mains? Affinity Water will be rubbing their hands....
Just another example of something done to try and improve the town, but behind the scenes, there is always someone making money!
Welcome to broken Britain

Any normal council would have built a water feature that reused water economically rather than just spray mains water supplies into the ether.
Like the Captain I ventured down to the Grand Opening on Saturday and like everyone else there was absolutely bemused that it wasn't even working. I despair of the people running this town.

In this day and age when we are supposed to save or recycle everything did no one representing the money providers and various consultants not pick up on this costly waste of water or the fact that on the Grand Opening Day this supposed feature could not and would not actually be working?
But I suppose I should not be surprised going by some of our previous grandiose schemes.
