Some people would much rather go back to the 'good old days' when it was tarmac and a roundabout!

Nice to see the old pictures of Dover full of shops and people.

Or go to the DDC Facebook page and despite a vocal few, there are many positive comments and the reactions overwhelmingly thumbs up and hearts against the various posts

What are we basing this assumption on, Kent Online reporting or the comments section from potential visitors? Only time and footfall will tell.

Anonymous KM comments are never an indication of things - try the DDC Facebook page and comments and likes from real people -

I agree those arches will be extremely popular when the weather is as hot as it is now.
What about during colder times when very few would appreciate being sprayed and how uninspiring in winter when I assume they will be off. Sadly this revamped area is really only aimed at very few of Dover's population, namely the young and those with money to spend.

I am not sure your average Dovorian would be following DDC on Facebook given [Dover's history] (see what I did there :)
As I said time will tell just like it did with the White Cliffs Experience and the Dover Big Screen.

Yes it’s a novelty It saddens to see when money could be spent else where. These grand schemes donot help with bus cuts etc.The whole way money is allocated needs a real overhaul .The NHS I’m not going to explain on here but just to say staff completely over worked.Lack Of beds etc .

As you know know as an ex-councillor the Coastal Community Funding is ringfenced for specific projects like this, it isn't there for buses and hospitals, if Dover didn't have it then somewhere else would have taken it.....

It could be said DoverForum isn't the views of an "average Dovorian" - yes there are some vocal negative views on Facebook but the overwhelming responses from people are 'likes' and they are going to be from the "average Dovorians" as hundreds of non-Dover people are unlikely to be following the DDC Facebook page

This is such a sad statement and as Sue alluded to, the whole way money is allocated needs a complete overhaul.
We used to have the same problem in the NHS. Every end of financial year departments would waste their budget on stuff they didn't need because if they didn't then other departments would get their underspend next financial year.
I really can't fathom how millions get spent on these projects yet we can't even provide basic local bus service levels.

Thank you Dover Pilot .The whole monetary system in this country needs a rethink .I understand as an xCouncillor.why these vanity projects get funded. How school budget are run.etc. Here in Dover needing food banks etc.Visit Dover how can you when they cut the bus services ..?During my twenty seven years at DDC I worked tirelesly. When I voted I always was aware it wasn’t my money but others .After my recent spell in hospital I would not want anyone to have had my experience. The nurses were marvellous .I m 84 years old and I never never want to witness the scenes of over worked staff again.Home again no follow up with my GP.I have to rely on my youngest Son to help me .The Elder working away .The few that work keep others in employment. This is no sob story but I will continue to make sure that change will happen. Our local MP should visit unannounced and work along side the staff in our local hospital.

Too true. I well remember when I was with the Civil Service and all of our tables were replaced one year.
They were not collapsing. No typewriters had fallen to the floor etc.
Apparently if we didn't spend 'this years'' budget we'd get less next year when we might actually need something!

From Facebook.
Went with my family this afternoon, whilst there were kids and families there, there were also some lovely local p*ss heads with their cans of super tramp and colourful language, NOT what I want my kids to be around.

Of course people want to see funding allocations being improved to hopefully focus on the things we (hopefully) collectively find important; however let's not pretend that DDC has any real influence on things like the NHS/GPs, or the bulk of the road network/road maintenance etc. Yes it can do a bit towards helping with homelessness, but given current land/build costs the money put into Market Square wouldn't have gone very far & we would still have been left with a bland, gray, awkward to use space in the centre of town.
In this instance Dover History Pages is absolutely correct, in that having applied for the funding to revamp the market square it could not be spent on anything else.
Of course it is a bit of a novelty at present but seems so far to be thoroughly enjoyed by young & old, with lots of kids playing, parents watching from the vastly increased seating and lots of older people taking equal advantage of the increased seating.
Yesterday saw a dance troupe using the stage area for the first time which seemed to go down reasonably well & is the first of many events planned for Market Square.
As both Sue & Bob know buses are not funded by DDC but by KCC (in part) & are provided by a number of private sector companies who need to at least break even to survive & continue to provide a service. However as we have seen the financial crisis at both KCC & Stagecoach has led to a drastic reduction in routes and frequencies across the district.

Hullo Captain. The rule on spending so outdated .Not allowed to keep for a rainy day so money is spent regardless on vantity and needless projects .Re the face book comment it is bound to happen in Market Square.Drunks will always be there and so off putting for locals and visitors .
