#199 It was close last time when Ken T ran Gordon C very close on a higher turnout.
The ward has part of the old Barton embedded now & has changed it's dead cert Labour return to a fight . A good campaign by a sensible independent could pull this in the future.
Well done Transport Jim.

So Mr Hood was elected with a mandate from about 1 in 20.
What is the point of all this?

20 odd quid a vote spent on it.

Less then 10% voted, and this goes to show how the vast majority of the masses have no faith in the present elected authorities. So give up!

A previously unknown independent from outside the ward got 47% of the vote against a party stalwart with the party machine actively behind him - something for the ruling party to worry about.
(and a surprise for me, almost agreeing with Alexander!)

The Councils have nothing to offer the people, no hope for a better future, just further and increased stagnation.
So the people don't see any reason to vote.
Perhaps the Council, in spending all that money on the election, over-estimated its popularity!

Sorry all this talk is rubbish only 10% of voters turned out,you can not go on that. It is and all ways will be the reds power house.

Vic, that doesn't make sense.
A 10% turnout takes all credibility away from whichever party won the election.

In fact, the councils are highly politicised, and this may give people the view they are only acting on behalf of politicians.

ray may have a good point about independent candidates, after all reg swept to power in eythorne without even one voter putting their cross against another candidate.

I wonder if it would be possible for some of our dedicated councillors to arrange for DDC to open their doors to the general public, allow themselves to be shadowed for a few days so that some of the more ignorant accusations made on this forum regarding the work they undertake may be better understood?

Lesley all our Council meetings are open to the public but rarely do we see any.If you want to shadow me I have no problem,Wednesday I have a scruity meeting at DDC at 6pm.and a Town Council Finance meeting at 6pm as well, which I will be unable to attend,Thursday Joint Transport meeting at DDC at 6pm.I am also 12 hour nights Sunday Monday and Tuesday and then 4 more night shifts and if you want to give blood on Tuesday with me you can.Seriously drop me a line on
cllrjohngoodwin@dover.gov,uk if you want to shadow me.

Thank you John but I have to confess....i have, in the past, worked as a parish and district councillor, also employed by seeda and ddc, so my comments were a bit of a come on to our more critical members!
I have never had a problem with knowing how hard SOME of our councillors work, likewise the officers at ddc.
Thanks again John, | respect you for such a quick response.

thin end of the wedge opening the offices to the public, the likes of brian and others would be on their toes with any laptop unattended and the water coolers and coffee machines would be in an unmarked white van within minutes.

That's ok Lesley you are right, lots of people have a go and most couldn't tell you what KCC DDC Cllrs and DTC Cllrs do,but if anyone wants to find out then by all means come and shadow me,but I will warn you then will be no slacking off with endless meetings and ward work and of course some of us have full time or part time jobs.I chose to stand as a Town Cllr last election and knew that being a District Cllr as well meant that I could not be so high profile on DDC so I came off the Shadow front bench,as I enjoy the grass roots at DTC and getting involved more with the people of my ward and the Town.
Yes it is easy to have a go at any Cllr but we see very few people taking up the cause, the rewards are high of course at DTC it is just over £400 a year while at DDC as 'just being a Cllr' you get just over £250 a month as you can see we don't do it for the money but it helps. At the Mayor's Christmas Ball I fed and watered the Cadets and the Salvation army from my own allowance and bought a ticket to the Ball which I saw very little off as I was looking after our visitors.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
