Yes I looked at both of them,I have been for that town ward before, it is the safe seat of the reds in Dover and their power house,And Mrs Smallwood was a very good cllr and will be very hard to follow what she done for the town. And when you get a cllr of her standing dieing in service still,I feel it would be wrong of me to stand at this time.
And the other one is to far away outside the 3miles from where I live. But I hope that somone will go for it.

Howard
Whilst fully accepting democracy I do find it strange that a bye election called when all 3 seats in this area
were unnopposed at last election!!!
there is a cost of £7,000 for the election in days of council cutbacks but thats democracy.
Do you know howard who it is that has decided to challenge the seat that labour will probably win

Find it amazing that people can attend and comment on democracy in Councils they are not elected to but can't fulfil obligation to the one they are elected to.
I pay tribute to Diane Smallwood for the way she fulfilled her duties when able to.

Illness can be a reason for dispensation not to apply the non attendance rule. In the case of Diane and others it is always agreed. You know that Keith from your days as an elected member. Members of all parties are always compassionate about these matters.

What is silly and a waste of money is calling a by-election now when in May there will be County elections anyway,as Keith said the cost to man, do the count ,and send out all the forms to every house in St Rad's (Town Council) and Elms Vale Maxton and Priory for (District) is thousands of ££££'s and with all Councils having to cut back then it is a waste of money for 3 months wait.
I also believe that as a mark of respect to Diane Smallwood it wouldnt have been difficult to wait to May for the by-election,saying that I have heard 3 or 4 names that it was suggested may stand, but nothing confirmed and I am not going to say who I have heard has thier names in the frames as we will find out soon enough. If it is contested then Labour will field a candidate in both seats, unless common sense prevails and someone is co opted on.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

I agree that the bye-elections should have been left until May when the County elections are scheduled. If it does become known who called it, it may backfire on them.
As an aside, the Tramshelter is finished and looks good - hope it stays that way.

The Vacancy on the District Council has not been called. Short memories when the late Alan Dale died in On Boxing Day 1988 the DDC election for the River seat was called within a few weeks .The same when Roger Frayne died .

It was prompted by another web site
As i said earlier £7,000 wasted realy, as john says could have waited till May when the seat was up for election.
Putting aside the disrespect for Dianne,
We have yet to see if names surface, although it appears there maybe an indy standing
(although ind of what is always of interest)

It seems to me that for a councillor not to suffer 'disrespect', all they have to do is pop their clogs.

Roger I think Keith is referring to the indecent haste to fill Dianne's seat as disrespectful. My #17 was aimed at those who make personal attacks on their opponents while they are alive then join in the hand-wringing after they pass away. Not relevant to Dianne's death, I always found her to be a very gracious lady.
