As a Follow up to my visit to the Prince Trust Programme in Dover on Monday here is the feedback and ideas from the attendees:
A regular international market
Music venue(s) for young bands to develop in
Create a central community centre with regular activities aimed at all the different communities in Dover and all the different age groups
Improved cinema - more modern/themed film nights etc.
More shops (town centre, Dover waterfornt/docks area)
Revamp the "bus station" area in Pencester Road Improve Pencester Gardens to make them more appealing
Redecorate/repair/renovate the buildings in the town centre to make it more attractive
Improve the public lighting around town to make it safer, but also to make it more interesting
Do something with Snoops
Use of paving (coloured?) to define areas of the town and routes through the town/to the attractions
Improve paving throughout the town
Improve seating in the town centre - new/clean/colourful - making them attractive
Better marketing of Dover and advertising of what is on
(I have grouped them into themes)
"Dream as if you'll live forever. Live as if you'll die today." - James Dean
"Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength,
While loving someone deeply gives you courage" - Laozi

Some good ideas there Ross; some are achievable in a short space of time, some are being worked on now.
The last one is very important - also making Dover a tourism destination.

The key is making Dover a destination for tourists. This means addressing the seafront/town centre/castle/Western Heights disconnect.
Things like shops will follow.

Absolutely Peter.
It's not just the "disconnect" though (cable-car for some of that ?); the seafront is very smart and has plenty of good dining and drinking places, but take a step behind the seafront at the underpass and that area lets the Town down very badly and may well deter people from coming into the Town centre.
The owner of that building must be forced to do something with it; either directly smartening up the building with a refurb/redec. or have a tarpaulin all the way round it, showing an artist's impression of what it will be like - that kind if thing works very well in mainland Europe.
The DTIZ will be a major draw for residents, visitors and people from miles around, including the Nord Pas de Calais region.

The town also needs to provide an interest for those that have little or no interest in history.

I'm sure there could be so much potential for the old Granada in Castle Street to be brought back to life for such a thing, but I only see the place being eventually demolished

Hi Paul, Ross mentions the site - Snoops - the young people at the Princes Trust know it as that rather than the 'Grenada', 'ABC Cinema' or 'Images' as the slightly more mature among us may remember its various guises over the years.

All great idea's and workable progress.
"Better marketing of Dover and advertising of what is on"
This will help with All communities and not just Dover.
I do not want to poke my nose in, this is an important project for you and Dover.
But If I can help in the future with marketing and advertising, I certainly will?

Hope it is a good launch Sue.
Many years ago I suggested that Dover should become a tourist destination and said then what should be done; as far as I am aware, nothing has been.
There should be closer working in East Kent to promote the area and between the individual areas/districts; we are all different and have a good range of draws and attractions.
Closer working to with Manston and KLM - we need to let people overseas know what we have here and show them why they should come to East Kent.

Needs people like English Heritage and the National Trust to be more involved in their surroundings but I think they are failing dismally, the former more than the latter.....

I agree with that Paul and would also suggest (have done so in my Tourism Strategy) that Dover Castle and the White Cliffs have a stand-alone web-site and they could have all the other historical sites, museums and attractins listed and links to them, so people can see what we have here and come to stay for a few days or a week or two.
In fact, all the historic sites etc. should have all the others listed and links provided.

Roger, there is nobody outside of the Council Chamber at DDC that believes the DTIZ will ever happen. The Town Team has created exactly the visuals you refer to but the cost of such a project is enormous - who do you propose should fund it?

The tarpaulin would be paid for by the owner of the building, David. I have written to the DDC enforcemernt offcer about that building and look forward to his reply.
The enforcement offcer has written to the owners of the neglected buildings and they will be smartened up.
Much work can be done by someone co-ordinating and leading on varoius projects and initiatives and this salary could/would be paid for by the major local stake-holders.
Ashford were/are paying £35,000 pa and a car, which is a very good salary; it could easily be say, £25,000. To 4 or 5 stake-holders, that isn't too much.

Roger, I'll get the email address of the owner from Simon, if you can persuade him to part with £thousands to decorate his building I'll buy every Forum member a bottle of champagne. His name is Schrieber, Simon knows him well.
As for the local stakeholders - who do you have in mind?
Once again, if you can persuade them to find the £50k pa needed to fund a person (rent, IT, stationery, phone, transport etc) I'll take you for a nice lunch.

buildings are being smartened up all the time by owners that have received enforcement notices, no-one is exempt.
