i am pretty useless at meetings, normally have a lot to say beforehand but by the time i get the chance to say anything someone else has said it or i have forgotten what i had to say.
others are very good at getting their point across and not afraid to interrupt others to do so.

On this thread, at local level, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. There are many people, councillors and politicians from all parties that are able to put aside politics and are concerned with helping community groups.
Yes people will say that they are just passing the buck onto these groups but the truth is that these groups can do a far better job of helping our communities than local authorities have done over previous years.
Of course this cannot happen without leaders, funding and a bit of faith from the communities themselves.
Dover has just been given a million quid, that's solid money in the bank and its up to the people of Dover to grasp the nettle and show the authorities what can be achieved by working together.
Time to stop talking and start doing, don't waste this opportunity to make a difference.

the town team come across as energetic with fresh ideas as shown by their efforts in offering help to budding business persons, mix in the big local people and the town has a lot to look forward to at last.
the town is full of volunteers, we have seen this in the past year with stewarding for the olympics last summer, sylvie and her colleagues doing the planting and tending thereafter, the market, the big clean up, the enthusiasm for the people's port and various others - time to be optimistic i feel.

Update 11th March
We have now booked the Stone Hall from 10-4 on 25th May with a "free" tea and coffee service to start the Dover Big Local Conversation.; we did look at the DTC chamber, but this is more difficult to get to/less obvious entrance for members of the public and can be problematic on a non working day getting officer coverage.
Turning to the day itself we discussed this at tonight's meeting and agreed:
1. This is about getting the message across and engaging in conversation so whilst we recognise the need for it to be fun we decided live music would most probably detract from the conversation. Alan is going to write to all the bands/performers he contacted thanking them for their interest and that we will be looking forward to working with them in future.
2. In order to keep it fun we agreed we should afford people the opportunity to represent their views in ways other than verbal, especially the younger generation by asking them to draw what they like or dislike about Dover.
3. Of course this will be as well as affording people the opportunity to talk to us.
4. We want to get a couple of, ideally laminated, A0 maps of the are covered and ask people to stick coloured post it notes on for things they like/dislike/want to see improved etc. As this will help us with building up the Vision.
5. Clare & Joanna are investigating getting young people engaged in some form of activity through the town on the day which we will use to get the message out to people about the meeting
6. Finally we will offer a number of ways for people to stay in touch/provide their details
Moving onto other matters.
Posters - The overall feedback on the DavisDavis proposed design has been highly positive and we are keen to press ahead with this. The meeting felt that we should seek 500 A5 handbills and 100 A4 posters as well as an electronic version that can be used on websites, information boards etc. I will be discussing this directly with Rick Davis asap. We will of course need to update the details on the bottom....
Web Site - Anita is wireframing this at the moment and will be putting forward an outline for review fairly soon, she has been tied up completing her dissertation and dealing with her day job, but now has a little more time to complete this.
Big Local Leaflets - I dropped of leaflets and the initial posters Carl provided at the Gateway Centre and The Library, hopefully they will stir some interest.
Princes Trust
I had a wonderful 2 hour conversation with the current group of trainees at the Princes Trust in Dover this morning which really seemed to fire their imaginations. I am proposing to get back in touch to see how many we can persuade to be champions and spread the message to their peer group
LTO
We discussed the need to move this forward and cam up with the following possible organisations to invite to tender for the role:
Dover Society
Dover Air Cadets
Dover Angling Club
Dover Sea Cadets
Dover Community Association
Town Team
Dover Peoples Port Trust
Western Heights Preservation Society
If there are other organisations you would like approached please let me know urgently
Many thanks for now

Sorry - it stands for locally trusted organisation - we need to seek one that will look after the "getting started" money for Big Local - the selected organisation receives a small commission on the money it looks after

It is potentially, but I think it inappropriate to apply given I am not only Administrator of LRCF but also Chair of the Dover Big Local Facilitation Group

Ross, that is a shame if it means LRCF will miss out but I can understand your reasoning as I suppose it could be seen as a conflict of interest by some. Would it be possible to link up with another local forum to apply and share equally any grant.

Howard - it can be any organisation that local people trust - so voluntary group, charity, church/religious group, trade union branch, sports club, local authority, business etc.

I agree with Ross, if this had come about in my term office I would have said the same. My own feeling is that the Dover Society, being the most respected, should be the LTO. As to whether the Hon Treasurer would take it on is another matter.
I don't think that a business should handle it, however "reputable" as Howard puts it they are.

Howard that is lovely of you, but I agree with Terry this should not be a business as such. However, I expect that the Town Team will have a serious look at it.

Unfortunately I would imagine this would be dificult as it would take them into a different threshhold with the charity commission and require more detailed reporting/independant examination than they already have

Yes Paul, that's one of the reasons the LRCF didn't go for charity status, it wasn't worth the hassle.

Indeed but it is something we regularly review, especially with recent changes in charity law and the advent of CIOs with much reduced reporting requirements
