Keith, you really are a witless individual. I've been mates with Brin for years, he was sat at my PC as I posted about the Welfare Club. He had come to see me to discuss the art of champagne socialism.
Ross, glad you're making progress, no doubt I'll get feedback from John and Simon.
I do have one issue though. Big Local was set up to help struggling communities, specific dedicated areas. There are two printers within that area, can I assume that as we didn't print the leaflets they were done by Adams? If so fair enough, it would be unfair if businesses outside of the Big Local area were benefitting while those within it aren't - surely that defeats the whole object.

David I dont think there is any need for that personal insult above there.
Who the witless one is can be entirely a matter of subjectivity.

David in direct response to your question:
We seek wherever possible to give work to business inside the designated area, however we must always apply a "best value" assessment to any tender and this will not only include location of the business, but also price, where the work is actually carried out, what else they offer to the community etc.
In the case of the printing work we have commissioned so far, the poster/handbill design was done by a local creative agency for free, the info leaflet layout was done by a different local agency for free; printing of the former was given to a Dover printer (just outside the area as they were significantly cheaper than any other quote and contribute significantly to Dover) the latter has been placed with a printer within the area (price and location decided this).
Hope this helps

Ross
I hope you will add to my unbiased (hopefully view on the meeting.
and of course hopefully you will add/correct.
I arrived a few minutes late due to work, but once there got to hear a number of projects that are taking place to brighten up Dover, or in the process.
I have to say the first 20 minutes or so it was difficult to hear because the door to the bar next door was open, it was closed which made hearing a little easier, also the set up it was difficult to see who was speaking, or someting even about what.
There was quite a lively debate about putting banners down the market square, in the hope of promoting the newly formed group, but when the first 5 groups (who were to go on the banner)was mentioned, quite a debate bagan, (including officers on the top table not being able to agree with each other) one group being Dover Castle, there was two trains of thought,
1; one that English heritage should foot much, or even a large amount of the costs of the banner, as they are (or will be)
getting a free advert
2; The castle is one of the five sites everyone knows and would be a good starter, and phase two(whaever that was) could
have a different five?
In the end it was voted through to pay for the banners as it was felt in the best interest of the town(although if im honest
the comment from the founder of the banners, that its a take it or leave proposal, didnt realy help debate.
Another proposal followed by another very energetic lady whos getting flowers in the market square and brightening the area, the lady was brimming with enthusiasm, and had other plans as well.
There still was single issue/groups but most if not all were pushing for a better Dover
I will Ross be putting the leaflets out next week Ross
and maybe the following week pick up some more from you?

Well things are progressing
Linda Aldred, our Community Development Worker, is doing some brilliant stuff at reaching out to the various sections of our community and capturing their views and ideas on where Dover is today and how to make it better. This will all go into the Vision document that we will be sharing with people who live, work and/or play in the Big Local area and asking then for their feedback on what they would like to see delivered.
In the meantime we are really pleased with the work done by Sylvie Parsons and the White Cliffs Hoteliers group in brightening up the town. These initiatives will be followed by other art installations/murals over the coming months.
The executive meet monthly to review progress, explore education/learning opportunities, support initiatives etc. With regard to the latter we are really pleased to announce that we were successful in a recent bid to be a pilot area for an initiative to support economic growth - we will keep you all posted on progress.
