i cannot find anything on the town council website that shows when the issue of benches has been discussed.

Perhaps the lady concerned would like to have one of these benches in her office instead of her chair?

I'd like to agree with you but then we would both be wrong!!

What a brilliant idea Malcolm maybe certain Council Members could join her.
Although I would not normally condone vandalism, maybe some of our more disreputable citizens could remove these blue waves when nobody is looking and pile them where the memorial benches were stored at the rear of the Town Hall.

I don't understand.
These benches were never designed to uncomfortable. I would like to know if the designer is aware that her work is being chosen for its lack of functionality. These benches have been installed in other places and I doubt that they were chosen for the same reason as DTC have given - although I would suggest function follows form on this one.
So that only leads to the question: how and why was this design chosen by DTC?
Personally I would like to think that the choice was just whimsical, with no consideration, and that this micro-social-engineering is just post-rationalisation in response to someone pointing out that people didn't like them.
If this isn't the case then this exposes a far deeper concern than just a lack of consultation; it represents a deep misunderstanding of aesthetics and design that can only be counterproductive for the future of Dover.

Yes Howard.
The reason that I wrote my last post in that way was to stop people spending too much time reading it.
I even omitted any backrest in my post to make sure that 'alkies' were not made comfortable. The lack of armrests was just to upset old people going to the Charlton centre.

This whole story has just thrown me Howard.
What about this line from The Guardian:
"The benches, which are made of seven curved strips of metal to blend in with the shape of the waves, do not have a back or armrest so that shoppers only sit on them for a few minutes."
Curved strips of metal to blend in with the waves...what does this even mean?
I suppose they are painted blue to 'blend in' with the sky.
Perhaps the workmanship and poor use of concrete (highlighted in post 78) is to ensure that the benches 'blend in' with Burlington House?

Darren, have you been moonlighting again? The guest presenter on HIGNFY tonight looked a lot like you. Nigel Farage was most entertaining on tonight's show, all the other guests were taking the p155 out of UKIP but he just laughed it off and enjoyed himself.

we have these two round the back of the town council offices facing the bowling club - rarely used, would be better off on the main shopping routes.

the one on the right has been refurbished, the one on the left is in a tatty condition.

Think you have it all wrong there Howard.
The one on the right is just a standard bench. The one on the left has been "designed" to appear tatty and less appealing to sit on. Even the mud in front of the the bench (that could easily be mistaken for grass worn away by users) is actually a 'design' feature to deter users that don't like getting their shoes dirty.
I think I'm getting the hang of this.

Looking at the blue wave benches yesterday I think they are designed for two people sitting on the ends and back to back (bump behind them) so they could lean against each other..........Ideal for those who have just had an argument.
It seems the "undesirables" are still welcome to use the wooden benches outside M&S but they must not go near the Town Council offices.
