#39 Howard, true but that isn't what I meant. My point was that letting in genuine refugees does not amount to open borders but is painted as such by those against accepting any refugees at all. Totally open borders would mean total chaos.

On the 30th September,a full council meeting was held at Whitfield of Dover District Council...
Prior to the meeting a Ms Helen Williams submitted a question asking for Syrian Refugees to be resettled in Dover District similar to Ben Banos' motion..Before the meeting took place Cllr Paul Watkins told the group leaders of UKIP and Labour that he plans for DDC to resettle 12 Syrian families..Ms Williams put her question and DDC Labour Leader Mike Eddy spoke in favour of the question..The vote was held, it was decided that 12 families would be resettled but I understand DDC are still waiting for government funds for it.. I was present at the meeting..
It wasn't mentioned that Ms Williams is actually Cllr Williams,a parish councillor from Kingsdown and long standing member of Dover and Deal Labour party.
During the following day the housing department of DDC were phoning B&Bs and small hotels asking if they take in refugees.I know because a friend of mine runs a small hotel.
Ms Williams aka Cllr Williams has since written to the Mercury and Express implying that the 12 families solution is too low.
I am sure you are sick of me and that you are bored to death of my posts but in reference to #23 Ross Miller...People who wish to represent us should show honesty and treat us as adults, not fools.

Unfortunately this thread is getting us nowhere, especially with migrants and refugees being confused as if they are the same thing. This thread has only confirmed my opinion that a politician will never give a simple straight answer and they put their party and their dictates before what their constituents want.
Europe have discovered what happens when you have open borders, it lets every Tom, Dick and Harry into their respective countries regardless of whether they are needed or wanted. I would hate that to happen in this country, we have to have a choice about who we allow to come and settle here.
We are a relatively small country with only so much space unlike many other EU countries.

My point was not aimed at Cllr Heron but at you Mr Ripley
You and the vast majority of politicians these days seem to have no stance on anything other than to attack the others/rest for not being steadfast in holding to a policy they may have once had/still have. You never talk about your policies or the costs or implications of them.
What turns people off politics more than anything else is the negativity of the tactics displayed by Mr Ripley's original post.

Of course we want honesty from our representatives and we want them to truly represent their community and its diversity of views and opinions rather than the factional interest of the party the representative belongs to, perhaps that is expecting too much of people who choose to run for office....
My personal view is not very dissimilar from Mr Garstin's - namely we should continue the rich and cherished tradition that the UK has of offering safe haven to those genuinely in fear for their safety and/or life - i.e. we continue to play our part in offering asylum to those who genuinely need it.
Under current EU rules there is little we can do regarding EU Citizens coming to the UK, though we could and should look at sensible residency requirements and a set level of NI/tax contributions in order to qualify for benefits/pensions/helathcare and attempt to reach agreement that similar rules/standards apply across all member states.
As for economic migration from outside the EU, we need to consider whether we have skills/labour gaps/shortages that require filling in the short to medium term and operate some form of points system (similar perhaps to Canada or Australia or NZ) whereby people with the requisite skills etc are granted the right to enter the UK for a period (say 5 years) subject to them having a firm job offer or getting work within say 3 months. We should also work with our fellow EU members to strengthen compliance with Shengen and ensure there is a central EU fund to pay for enhanced border controls and security on the EU's southern and eastern borders etc.

The labour party supports open borders !
That's why they lost the election and the Tory's are back in power.
so not surprising to see labour members on a let them all in marches ?
If Miliband had of been elected PM he would have flooding the uk just like Germany.
And miss Hawking would have supported him .

Please note on page 17 of the Dover Express dated 5th November. There is information from the Green party and myself on the march that was held on the 17/10/15..There is also a picture of Dover and Deal Labour party who were involved in the march..There was no comment from the Labour party in the article or of the article..

Wasting your time Peter if you expect a response. All our local parties including yours are secret societies unable or unwilling to debate on anything publicly. The odd statement without backing it up with facts, and photo opportunities are the best we can hope for. Street stalls are great for the converted to gather one Saturday per month and then at election times pour out unlimited leaflets and tracts with half truths. The percentage of people that actually vote continues to drop.

"The percentage of people that actually vote continues to drop."
Which is hardly surprising considering what a bunch we get standing at election times. The number of times I hear... "why should I bother to vote, they are all the same" or "they are only in it for the glory/money" or "they are all lying ba****ds"

#post50.I had a response from Cllr Mike Eddy Labour group leader of DDC and KCC councillor by a letter in the Mercury. Its in this weeks edition.Cllr Eddy confirmed a Labour party banner was at march and the Labour party supports in welcoming refugees. He said there was no change in policy.Keef Sansum also wrote a letter confirming that Jeremy Corbyn is in favour of Open Borders. Both letters were slightly insulting referring to me.Kill the messenger? My shoulders are almost broad. That's politics.

Do you find it too complicated to refer to me by name Peter, post 50 indeed. Pam does that too when replying directly to another member which I find rather offhand - must be a political thing.

Sorry Howard, no slight intended..I did notice that your post said I would not receive a reply from the Labour party,I wanted to save any embarrassment to you by giving a name check..
You say I am similar to Pam..Pam is a real professional..I am very honoured...I hope Pam will continue to post on the forum.
This saga has been going on for a long time..If they stated their case in first few days.It would be, a distant memory..All parties do this.Jan is right.....Thank you Cllr Eddy for replying.

According Reuters and Yahoo, also Sky news. Two of the terriorists killed in Paris..One came through Greece early this year. The other one, came through Greece last month..Both were registered as Syrian Refugees with the Greek government..A Syrian passport was found..Fingerprints were taken from their bodies and a check made..I understand it is normal practice for migrants seeking asylum in the EU, for asylum seekers to give their fingerprints...Hopefully the UK does the same...
The reason I have posted this on this thread...I agree that Genuine refugees should be given sanctuary..Who is genuine??
Our politicians whoever they are, should be duty bound to keep us safe...The statement,Refugees are welcome here, should be used with care..I do not envy our leading politicians...Sad times.
