If the people who are not to be named died for their country it should not matter if it was a war or a conflict.
Shame on the council for being so petty.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

Cowans arrogance - "those that are most worthy" - is breathtaking. Shame on all of those involved in the decision.

Surely, if people have died serving their country and they came from Dover, they all "deserve" to be named/listed - don't they ?
I wonder what the Dover War Memorial Project people think ?

Seems an awful shame. Does anyone know what exactly the criteria for inclusion is?
IF it boils down to finances, could the money be raised publically via appeal to have the memorial updated?
I would like to know the criteria set down for inclusion on the memorial and when and by whom they where set , does anyone know ?

it all seems a bit vague but up until this year names were added without any problems

maggie is quoted in the article.
phil
the article says it is not just about finance but it was the councillor responsible for finance that was quoted.

I'm not going to post an opinion on this until I have heard views from some DTC members.

probably a good idea not to hold your breath peter, comes across as more secretive than a masonic lodge.
all the silences do is create chinese whispers when a simple explanation for a decision might placate everybody.

Ian I agree but I would like to hear counsel for the defence before erecting the gallows.

Always an excuse to worm their way out of it Peter, I can't wait to hear it, spineless gits.
I wasn't thinking of gallows anyway.

As far as I can make out and understand the memorial was dedicated to commemorate those servicemen and women who fell during WWI & WWII and that names would be added on a 3 yearly basis.
The council are suggesting that civilian or retired personnel or those who gave their lives post those conflicts are commemorated in another way/

Had the following through from Vic Matcham who was Chairman of the Committee at DTC when the memorial was setup....

I have been reading what your members have been saying about the above, and they are right with what they have put,I would like to add that I was the chairman of the committee on the Town council at the time of the setup and helped with the funding ,also we passed that the War Memorial will go on for ever with names of Dover both man and woman that were killed in service. That does not mean military only they could have been a fireman etc.
But what the town council did say at the time was the funding they are giving to the memorial will stop at some time. But the Town council will always pay for the names to go on it. So the DTC of today are out of order in stopping it they do not have that power. Please print this onto your forum.
Thank you Cllr Vic Matcham

Thank you Vic. Now, please can Cowan or similar give a response? You must have expected a huge backlash, surely? The arrogance and sheer bad timing of this is unbelievable. Yes, Peter, we need to have all the facts - one of those facts is that people who died serving their country are apparently not worthy to be named on a memorial dedicated to same. If Cowan or similar would like to clarify that it would be welcome.

Regarding the criteria for inclusion on the memorial, there is information here:
http://www.doverwarmemorialproject.org.uk/Casualties/MissingNames/Qualifications.htm
This also links to further information.
I did send a long report to Allison, our Town Clerk, regarding criteria and the current list of names that were requested, asking her to put this before the Committee. I understand that there was quite a debate at that meeting, regarding inclusion of names on the War Memorial. I am awaiting a reply to a letter I wrote to Allison on 29 April, requesting information regarding the debate, the reasons why the names should have been declined, and a copy of the documentation that was given to the Committee when they were debating the matter.
The DWMP is totally voluntary, and while Simon and I fund much of the work personally, we do depend on donations and the support of others to continue. Cllr Cowan is a supporter, and that support has enabled us to continue parts of our work in Remembrance of all our Dovorian Fallen that otherwise we would have been unable to do.
Views are always welcome, and if anyone should wish to contact us directly, the details are on Dover's Virtual Memorial, address below.

People remember the fallen in different ways to be sure, however there are many that get comfort from having somewhere that their lost are noted and around which they can gather. Sadly conflict continues and lives are still lost in the service of this country and they should, indeed must, be remembered.
As I am not on the committee that discussed this I was unaware of the decision until very recently, even though it is obviously a decision that affects the whole town I would have expected it to be taken to full council. It was not and had it been I would certainly have voted against it. The three year pledge was made and should be honoured.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.
