As a child I always considered Deal the poorer cousin to Dover, Deal always seemed old fashioned and scruffy. Many were grateful for our modernised town centre and market square with chain stores selling 'stuff on the tv ads'!. Now I would say the reverse is true, Dover is scruffy and unkempt and most definitely dated, filled with empty units that even big brands can't sustain. Deal, on the other hand is quaint and the shopfronts are appealing and are most remain independents. Dealites once complained that DDC neglected them, yet I bet they now count themselves lucky, Deal thrived because of their lack of involvement.

Yes good post. I remember when Dealites would go on a shopping trip to Dover on a Saturday, not anymore. There is wide distrust and opposition of DDC in Deal these days - just look how quick they have back tracked on recent proposals to ban flowers from benches or engulf Walmer with beach huts. I even hear there is a community watch group proposed to monitor anything DDC does which could impact Deal.
Dovorians seem more supportive of DDC and its leadership. Certainly on here every time I criticise Mr Watkins it is met with disagreement. As Andrew rightly pointed out, Dover has so much potential and Dover & Deal working together to utilise their best assets could be world class. But to achieve this the local political landscape would have to change.
I firmly believe Dover needs to concentrate on its attributes and build a community devoid of any DHB involvement and then start protecting, enhancing and promoting these attributes to visitors and
media and then scale up. The DDC solution of just dropping large scale white elephant vanity projects into the town have so far done nothing to help.

I must say when I went to events in Deal i always received a warm welcome .You would think they might have reacted differently as I was a Conservative?

I fin d it difficult to believe that DDC is biased in any way against Deal. Let's take a look at the facts, 45 councillors 12 of which live in Dover, 13 in Deal, 3 in Sandwich, 16 others that live in the idyllic villages spread around the district or just outside and one who lives in Canterbury

I wish Deal well and know many people there and enjoy visiting, despite fielding a certain amount of anti-Dover barbs. You just get tired, as a Dovorian, of being treated like a second class citizen when you go out of town. Not by everyone by any means, and certainly not just in Deal, but often enough.

I find that comment rather tasteless Captain, I hope neither his family or friends are on this forum.

I think it would be outrageous if Deal get this funding after our Market Square regeneration bid got rejected.

How odd there must be plenty of nicer places than Margate or even Deal.

Yes there are Jan. Isles of Scilly. Still reassuringly expensive! Three weeks in and two to go.
