The fountain would be like the one in Folkestone, blubbers I think they are called, the feature would fit, the tanks are already in place under existing fountain, if all goes well and things do go according to plan you might see a change some time next year, give us a chance, miricles don't happen over night

nobody expects miracles they just don't like being kept in the dark.
all we have heard officially is that the fountain is closing nothing about any replacement.
people fear the loss of the bandstand as noises have been made about it, the town cannot afford to lose much more without closing down altogether.
It would be good to know the thinking behind decisions , why replace it at all , can it be adapted in its current form , if not , why not , whats the cost of the replacement , when was this decided and by whom etc etc ........

sadly it is a common problem all around the country, not endemic to dover.
thankly we have this medium and also the many comunity groups that are vocal in their desire to having their views heard.

Sheila - is DTC taking over the responsibility for the fountain and in so doing, have decided that they should replace it with another, of a different design ?
I've not heard anything about DDC giving it away.
A simple railed-off fountain would allow it to remain open virtually all year and actually save money by not closing it every five minutes.
I actually like the present fountain and many visitors to Dover do as well.

the problem with railing of the fountain is that children will not be able to put their hands in and make a splash.
you can see that everday when walking past.
roger makes another point about who runs the soon to be defunct fountain, more clarification is needed.
Trafalgar Square. I say no more.

Why bother with a fountain at all?
BUT
If there is to be a fountain, why there is a fountain needs to be kept at the forefront of the mind. It should not be seen simply as another problem to be dealt with as cheaply as possible. Clearing the country of Statuary would make walking about so much easier, who needs to see the long dead looking as if they were ever at the head of a cavalry charge?
There is way too much of the downside associated with this. Surely the benefits are legion?
Civic pride is that which rails against railings?
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.
The fountains in Trafalgar square are boarded off for major events nowadays , but only for the events and very quickly put back sometimes within a matter of minutes

Oh, the wonders that dwell in the pipe
are sure to emerge when time's ripe
they are sure to amaze
one of these days
but, to pass the time we'll just gripe

Very good Tom.
From Sheila's posting about a new fountain in the Market Square, it would appear that they (DTC) are thinking and talking about taking over responsibility for a water feature there.
If this is the case, then good luck to DTC and hope their talks come to fruition very quickly.
The current fountain is over 30 years old and as has been mentioned on here a number of times, has some quite delicate water pipes/spouts.
Everytime it is turned off/on, it weakens it, everytime it is dismantled it is weakened even more.
There are many, many events scheduled for next year from around May to September and such an amount of events means that it will be knackered/nfg by the end of the season if it was turned off and on for each event.
It looks like Dover will be blessed with events next year, whether for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations or the LOCOG's Olympic Torch events.
DDC and LOCOG are working very closely with each other to ensure that every event will be organised perfectly - and safely too.
I have been assured that there is no intention to do away with the fountain, but if talks between the Town and District Councils continue and do come to fruition, a new feature could be in place much sooner than we think.
Good Luck to both parties.

Roger no DTC is not taking over the fountain, and Keith I can only say wait and see, things are looking good regarding the fountain, if the talks come to fruitition then work could be done whilst the VIC and Museum alterations are being done, this could help keep costs lower, I must say that the bubblers sound a great idea
