I'v just had a reply from DDC well the officers anyway.
im being told the fountain is always turned off in october only operational from april to october.
if it were on the tv screen would need to be turned up ?????
anyway thats the reply from the council, don't agree its a poor reply
what do others think
looks like the officer led council is looking towards the olympics and there events as an excuse to keep the fountain closed as this was also mentioned

sounds like a cobbled together reply keith, i agree that the plan seems to be to close it altogether.
rather ironic that this week the harbour board done a deal with saga to ensure that dover gets their cruise liners visiting for another 4 years.

Keith.
Another "we can't change it because that's how we have always done it" syndrome. No foresight.
Howard.
That is great news for Dover/Deal.
If the DHB had lost Saga, other operators, would jump ship(no pun intended).

Yes, Tilbury is expanding and will become a threat, which makes securing Saga a big success for Dover/Deal.
As I have said before, these operators have to make decisions from 4 to 5 years in advance, this new contract give's Dover 4 years to improve matters.
Lose these contracts and the cruise terminal will close. This really is a big slap on the back for DHB's Dover Cruise Terminal Team.

It is indeed very good news for Dover and and Dover's businesses. It would be interesting to know how many other cruise lines also sign up.
As regards the fountain, I'm having a meeting Monday afternoon about it.

the fountain feature will not close as such, there will be a water feature there, but not one that is boarded up half the year, one similar to what they have in Folkestone, DTC and DDC are in talks regarding this, things are starting to look better for the forth coming year and onwards

I wouldnt mind it being shut for half the year if we had something other than the ugly box to look at.
Have chosen my favourite in the library this week, some of the multi-functional designs were great.

the fountain is doomed as evidenced by the exhibition to choose a tea cosy going on in the library.
as for a water feature replacing it this has never been mentioned before.

I think the design of our present fountain is beautiful and attracts many people to the Market Square, which is good for the businesses around there.
Instead of changing the fountain or closing it for the whole of next year, why not have the costs to close and start it up again, shared between the Town and District Councils ?
Roger
Sheila Amos...
Do your comments mean Dover will have the Spouting Fountains such as the
very successful ones by Folkestone Harbour,
donated by The Folkestone Harbour Company ?
These are a great success for everyone, and they are fun, no washing up liquid or vandels can touch them......
Would be a doing feature for young and old to enjoy, and good for trade etc. etc....
Or they could go down to the Water Front......
Alternatively......the Fountain could go down to the Waterfront,
with the Bandstand

The fountain would be lovely in front of the Public Gardens in front of the Gateway Flats............
The Bandstand would be put to more use, and less vandalism on the Seafront...wonderful attraction....
Spouting Fountains in the Market Square.....they can be switch on and off at will...
I urge you to go to Folkestone on a happy day, and see what fun it is...
This way, a good addition................and nothing is wasted
The Television could go down the end of the Pier
Vote me in......I am ready

CHARLIE
If only it was that easy to say a few words and get voted in.
thankfully it takes more than that and people usualy vote for those that are around all the time, respected, work hard(some) etc
so more to do there me old sun shine lol
on the fountain, well it looks like we have some progress on the fountain, but now it appears we have differing views from our 2 main parties.
shiela saying talks are in hand to have a spoutng fearure like the one in folkestone((which i have to agree with charlie it doeas attract the crowds)
and roger who wants the present fountain to remain.
lets hope these differences are resiolved(rather surprized roger as part of the controlling administration wasn't aware the town and district councils were talking to each other on the fountain issue)

the water feature in folkestone is excellent but would never fit into market square.

All I want is an attractive feature that is there 365 days a year and is not fenced off by petty rules and regulations.
The fountain could run all year with antifreeze and an ornamental fixed railing round it, surely that would satisfy the H&S lot.

jan; we agree on this one

Jan you are quite right an ornamental fencing stucture around the fountain would stop any fears about people falling in or tampering with the mechanism
