There's nothing new about cooperatives and its an excellent model. What we need to get it off the ground is a comprehensive business plan (2 sheets of A4 ain't enough!!) and about a hundred people each with £10k to invest in their own futures. Then it could fly and would most likely attract all sorts of funding, although some might be expensive.

I would join you Howard but I am on the see-saw at the moment and then off to the round-about.

If I was younger, I would be biting at the bit so to speak at Alexanders idea, a young mother sitting at home, with a sewing machine just standing there as an ornament, could be running up some clothes designed by local school children (secondary schools or further education schools), I have an industrial sewing machine and would have willingly have put myself forward in my younger days, I worked at home, for a pittance when my children were small. But out of that came a couple of large orders which were needed for a specific time, my Niece and I worked as a team, those orders were completed, and very soon we were taken orders of our own, so it can be done with a bit of committment, and hard graft.

Yes, my wife used to make costumes for TV shows such as the Two Ronnies and The Good Old Days. Remember the Ronnies' Cossack sketch? She made all those uniforms.

That's more like it, really interesting posts. Howard you make me smile! The ping pong of posts just reminded me of kids having a spat and needing an early night.

I helped make shirts for the rich and famous, there was a shirt factory outlet where Roger and Jeans place is many moons ago, it was a London firm, but its base was here in Dover, we made shirts for Spencer Stracy, Lord Rothchild, King Fiesal and many more, one the Lord mayor of London at the time had a large neck measurement on one side and normal on the other side of the central neck buttonhole, I believe he had some sort of growth, but all these problems were catered for. I also made good quality clothing, not just cobbled together as it is today, pull one thread and everything falls apart, this is the sort of thing that needs to come back, good quality for reasonable prices.

Sheila, your idea is admirable, unfortunately to get to the stage where we have people working from home providing goods is incredibly expensive and time consuming. This is the reason I've been pressing for Alexander to provide a business plan outlining initial costs. Once he's done that we can start to plan, until he does we're going nowhere. I guarantee that any idea that will help Dover will be thoroughly pursued.

"present them to us"
This phrase sticks out like a very sore thumb. If you can rethink it David I shall delete this.

No idea what you mean Tom.
We have a meeting about regenerating Dover, people have ideas, we are inviting them to present the ideas to us to see if we can help.

I recall a news item , some time ago, about a community who had a voucher I.O.U. system where local people offered their services in exchange for vouchers which could, in turn, be exchanged for others services. It seemed to be working well , saving people money and creating a real sense of worth to those 'older' members of the community who could help educate youngsters on a variety of skills both professional and practical i.e. exchange 6 hours painting and decorating for 6 hours babysitting / gardening / dressmaking.
If people wanted to Bank their credits together they could then nominate a worthy cause to benefit.
