We all know that there are many clever forgers out there who can fake passports quite easily.
I can't believe this has happened, especially from Conservative Ministers - I am truly at a loss. I believe this is very serious; someone please tell me it isn't so.

I saw on Sky News last night during 'press preview' that one of the newspapers is carrying a development in this story today...yes indeed that Government Ministers gave the UKBA the nod to do it...ie.. To let Non-EU people through without checking at all. Damian Green being a Ministerial name mentioned. This is such an outrage that words fail a chap...
Now it seems Theresa May is making a statement in The House today. This story has already developed legs and someone's head should roll. May's head preferably.
After all that sanctimonous verbose bluster about immigration previously..to purposely do this is..well I will use that term again..an outrage.

PaulB - you are suggesting that Theresa May had something to do with this. She did not. In fact she is furious and has suspended the officials responsible. The suggestion that they had ministerial approval may just be a smokescreen but if, and its a big if, Damian Green did give the nod then yes, the man should be sacked and, what is more should resign his seat in disgrace. Green always was a bit of a wet and is one of the few Europhile Conservative MPs.... I will not shed any tears for him is he goes.

someone in the government will have to fall on their sword or be pushed onto it.
i don't believe that the border agency head took such a decision without being given the nod, my suspicion is that the home secretary will stay - dave needs her around to make him look good.
we don't know how long the policy of inviting everyone in ran for, more than a few weeks and word would have spread to all the organised crime chaps/chapesses that were being hunted down in their own country that an open invitation awaited them in our country.

Shortly before and during the period when the entry checks to the UK were relaxed, several armed groups who Britain was at that time fighting, and to an extent still is, announced they would launch attacks in the West.
These statements were reported on mainstream news channels at the time, so must have been known to the security chiefs in Britain and to the competent ministries.
Britain was involved in armed conflict in various areas, there was every reason to assume that our security at home was at higher risk of retaliation.
As far as I am concerned, the Prime Minister and other cabinet ministers have acted in a treacherous way by not ordering increased security at our borders, but instead allowing the exact opposite to take place.
Adding to that, a week ago it was announced that, since 3 October, not one RN warship is at high readiness in our waters.

LOL well Reg - even the most buffoonish Minister in the present government could not possibly do a tiny fraction of the the damage Gordon Brown did, even Cable and Huhne!

My guess is that the Government will very soon drastically change the laws on immigration, starting with non-EU immigration, which will probably grind to a halt.
It's gone too far, and this latest episode has left many people shocked and deeply concerned.
Our internal security is at risk. Rather than the Government falling on their own swords, I think they will do the next best thing, and introduce some very strict immigration laws, and we may expect a harsh clampdown on people preaching hatred against us after coming over here and taking up abode.
It will become a matter of top priority.

Reg - no there was no Minister approval, it is an allegation by a Union as a desperate attempt to defend its members and cannot be taken seriously. Theresa May was furious when she heard what happened.
As for 'flippant and lacking credibility' - well Mr 'I banned boom and bust' Gordon Brown was central to everything that created the bust we are currently in. You may choose to ignore the simple facts of what that man, the most incompetent chancellor and PM in our history, has done but history will not. A deluded buffoon if ever there was one.

I agree with what you say about about Gordon Brown Barry, but not sure I can agree with what you say about no Ministerial involvement - sounds like passing the buck to me.
Even though I am deeply disappointed about this (an understatement) I can imagine it would surely have been given some kind of (ministerial) sanction to do so ?

Not necessarily Roger. We shall see. The likely reason is likely to be the same as we have seen with the HMRC scandal, governance problems arising from the botched re-organisation/merger of departments. Problems from that kind of thing can take a while to come to light.

I'm very calm Reg. - I still agree with Barry about GB - some people have either very short memories or in denial.

Reg - I am quite calm thank you. My opinion of Brown is based on well established facts and the damage he actually did. We should all get angry at the damage he has done, his cruel deceit handing out dosh to all assundry without any regard to its sustainability in the real world and then enabling and participating in the wrecking of the economy so it has to be clawed back in cuts. A truly nasty and cruel man.

if the ministers knew nothing of what went on it raises the issue of their total incompetence and fitness for the offices that they hold.
they have teams around them that advise them on everyday matters, i can only think that a blind eye or ear was turned.

Howard - not necessarily. Ministers, all Ministers, depend on the Civil Service for information at the end of the day. The only other sources of information they have internally are whistle blowers. You surely have seen Yes Minister - that is too close to the truth for comfort.

Given the rate Cameron is getting through ministers, our Charlie will be in the cabinet before the end of this parliament.
