A number of newspapers had individual stories whilst he was still alive apparently, but did not have enough corroborating evidence to feel comfortable that they would win the inevitable libel cases if they published. One editor was on the news last night and said as much, he also added that if he had known that there were other women making similar accusations at the time, he would have published.

"Some of these allegations relate to activity on BBC premises in the 1960s and 70s. We are horrified by allegations that anything of this sort could have happened at the BBC - or have been carried out by anyone working for the BBC."

The Jeremy Vine Show on BBC Radio 2 this lunchtime carried much of this story. It seems the women claiming abuse are credible and reliable sources, not to be dismissed lightly. Louis Theroux made the allegations in a documentary a while back and Paul Gambaccini alleges that the suspicions against Jimmy Saville were common knowledge within the BBC. If so, there is a clear parallel to be drawn with the Catholic Church's cover up of paedophile priests and the BBC covering up Jimmy Saville's actions. If so, I hope those at the BBC who covered it up will be held accountable.

He particularly irritated me in his role as spokes person for promoting our brilliant HST revolution. To my mind he made it all a tad tacky as the stories abounded even then. This is the age of THE TRAIN. The ad agency boss detested him but had to concede to his mass appeal. He seemed to have fooled Captain of Industry Peter Parker the then chairman of BR-who went along with it all.

I watched the programme, I watched the adverts. Why we needed to see fuzzy reconstructions - I don't know. Why e-bay ran their ad, "anything you want...you can get" (or similar) is also puzzling.

I also watched it and the big question for me was why was the whistle not blown by all the adults who seemed to know or at least had a strong suspicion that he liked young girls. I appreciate that our attitudes to talking about sex abuse might have changed from 40 years ago but surely our disgust at such behaviour has not.

Yes Jan, none of the adults were involved in the programme, the eldest mentioned were in their early twenties. There perhaps was one that did get a mention and he was the associate of the young woman who walked in on something...and he just laughed.
Mind you, even today the short skirt and the too-too red lipstick are used to defray blame. I'm sure I put something here about a local headmistress saying just these things a few months ago. But, when much sexualisation of the young is under the spot-light and in front of the foot-light much else goes on in the dark.
Instead of granting children a childhood the thrust today is to groom the young for work in the adult world...it's a toughy.

I see the lynch mob has started: a plaque on the wall of a block of flats in Scarborough where Jimmy Saville used to live has been removed after 'paedophile' and 'rapist' were daubed on it. I feel that this may be just the start of it and that even his headstone may be desecrated.
I don't go along with mob rule; even if he was guilty of all the allegations made against him, Jimmy Saville raised millions for charity and although goes no way to excusing paedophilia, it does show that he was a caring human being. There is much to be gained from letting sleeping dogs lie. This may be an ideal, but I hope people will take all sides of his character into consideration when judging him before destroying anything associated with him.

I fancy that the mob rule in all of this was that which silenced dissent. A monument of any description is only a thing. I cannot agree that Jimmy Saville is the victim here.

I think Andy's reply shows exactly why he did get away with such behaviour for all that time.
It seems money is the biggest factor to excuse abuse, maybe if Gary Glitter (who was mentioned last night) had raised millions for charity he would have got away with what he did.
