 - Well, what is being said, and what there appears to be evidence for is the sexual assault of children. It's a bit off to bemoan the sexualisation of the young of today only to ascribe to the young of yesteryear that same worldliness.

If adults are prepared to give such an Icon the benefit of the doubt, what might the innocents involved think?

If these accusations can be supported JS would deserve the same vilification as Gary Glitter, and the children every support.

 - I have to admit I never liked the man even if he did raise a lot of money for charity so I am quite prepared to believe these women.

To those who ask why now, I think it is because there is no longer the stigma (if that is the word) of men and women admitting child abuse as there would have been even 10 years ago.

 - I did once mention these charitable works to a spinal-injury patient and the possible reason behind the reaction I got may be explained this week.

Then again, if there was reason to be less than impressed, why keep schtum?

 - wise comments tom, there is a lot of stuff held back on this. reluctance to take action because of the loss of dosh to charities and also whether a jury would convict mr nice guy on the words of young girls.

 - I am not the slightest bit surprised about the accusations against Saville, take the fame away and alarm bells would ring if he was around children. - Audere est facere.

 - I too am not surprised about this, I always found him a bit creepy, but there is something unsettling about all this arising after his death. Someone should have raised the issue publicly while he was alive so he could answer the accusations, in court if necessary.

 - complaints were made but the suggestion is that savile was such an icon that it would make it impossible to convict him.

 - Barry, you have made me realise why I never liked him creepy fits the bill perfectly. On your other point this was first raised about 5 years ago while he was still alive. - -----------------------------------------------------------------------

 - No-one should be above the law particularly in such serious matters even when an 'icon' raising money for charities.

Jan - but why did it not lead anywhere? I certainly don't remember anything about it.

 - I was invited once to an event where he was present. After being told by a former national radio dj that he was "odd" I didn't go.

Rumours abounded 30 years ago, I'm surpised it's taken so long to come out.

He did after all have a very unnatural relationship with his mother.

 - It should have been investigated while he was still alive. It doesn't seem very fair to bring it all up now when he can't defend himself.
