Paul, that bit of beach just visible behind the toilet block in you picture was known as the town beach. Until the dualling of Townwall St in that area it had boat plots run by DDC, the nearest one was held by an ex-lifeboatman (I think his name was Alf Cadman, Terry can probably confirm) who used to sell his paintings of local scenes from his shed on the plot.

Not sure Ray, but I think that may have been Arthur Liddon. I was at primary school with his son Barry (where is he now?) who was always on about a boat on the beach. Alf by the way was featured in the Dover film shown at the last Film Festival.

I don't think it was Terry, I knew Arthur when he was an instructor at the Invicta sailing centre. Bio of Alf Cadman and a link to Arthur here -

I used to have an old lifeboat on the beach there. There were quite a few other smaller boats on plots.

I hope they know there is a 2 ton weight limit in the area near the shelter opposite the Gateway, some of those machines look on the heavy side.

Here are some pictures from the latest progress...things are moving forward a pace.
Here we see an engineer yesterday morning with his wheely measuring gadget following the tarmac filled cracks. This is after all the top layer was stripped away. The sun is directly behind him hence the unusual early morning lighting highlighting the cracks.
Then more heavy equipment moved in. So far Martin nothing has fallen through...you will be pleased to hear. Some of the equipment is indeed big and heavy.
Then the re-surfacing began. They have made good progress since this shot. Working very fast.

The new surface will be blue this time instead of pink?
CONWAY, eh? Who was that financier that left so many skint? Made-off, or similar.

Tom got this picture specially for you...taken a few minutes ago. The new surface will be pink...not quite as pink as the current one but it might bleach up in time..you can see the difference here. Thats the new surface pink on left of shot, the under-surface layer to the right...not yet done.
Another picture of the heavy equipment...hard work fascinates, one could watch it all day

Amazing what can be done when the Olympics are the excuse, I can think of some truly awful pavements and that need resurfacing but the torch will not be passing by them. Maison Dieu to Ladywell opposite the the new flats springs to mind, lethal.

Well they did work fast..made hay while the sun shone.
Here are the latest pictures.
The before and after......
All looks done if not quite dusted. For the first section anyway. As we now realise the eastern side of the toilets are DDC...there is going to be quite a difference in the surfaces.
