00:5737505Just to add my two pennyworth to the debate, without sounding sexist, might I suggest that the main use of public toilets is men wanting a pee (often after drinking far too much of the falling over water). Unfortunately the enclosed nature of lavatories makes them prime targets for vandalism, drug taking and all sorts of unsavoury activities.
(I seem to remember a sketch with Spike Milligan as a lavatory attendant who came out with he memorable phrase that so many strange things went on in his lavatory that someone coming in for a shit was like a breath of fresh air).
The continentals have had their pissoirs for years and as can be seen from the attached photo London are now bringing in high-tech ones.
Perhaps the introduction of a few of these at prime sites might be the way forward?

11:3737528Just had an e-mail from the Dover Greeters which came from the Dover Society that they will be attending the meeting over the closure of the toilets, they are disgusted by the closure.
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

Re "Dover greeters".
This is not part of the Dover Society.
The Dover Society has its Executive Council meeting this evening when I have no doubt the question of toilet closures will be debated.

20:4437595Pat I didn't say Dover Greeters are part of the Dover Society,I am a Dover Greeter but they e-mailed Dover Greeters to express there concern over the closure of the public toilets and of course the greeters agree that the toilets should be open.

23:0537614The Dover Society Executive Council discussed the subject of Dover Town Toilets this evening.
The Society is concerned with regard to any closures of toilets which it feels greatly affects the amenities of Dover as well as giving a poor image to visitors (tourists).
The Society hopes that DDC/DTC will find a amicable solution for these facilities that are used by people from all parts of the District.
Members of the Dover Society Executive will be at the meeting on 20th.
PS
John
Dover Society e-mailed to various contact organisations advising of the meeting on the 20th.

with all due respect, how much effect does the dover society have on any decisions made by the hierarchy of dover?
to an outsider there seems to be a lot of meetings and motions passed( no pun intended), but do they influence anything?

10:0137651Just to let you know that following my emails out to those on my email address groups about the public meeting on the devolvement of responsibilities, I had some replies back, asking if their views can be emailed somewhere, or an online petition be started as they can not make the meeting; after talking to the Town Clerk, there is now an email address that can be used to inform the DTC of your views - it is on the DTC website.
The email address, is:
council@dovertown.co.uk
So if you cannot attend the meeting, or you prefer to put your concerns and views on an email, that's how to do it.

10:2837652Oh what a tangled web.we weave when we first deceive ,or something like that ,Keith ,I merely tried to point out that JO public reading the minutes of the DTC Full Council of 26th November would not have realised that the toilet issuei was raised then .I pointed this out to the deputy Town Clerk and now a full account of the Mayors note to the council has been published .Minute 431 .
Back in November the DTC were made aware that DDC wished the DTC to take over some of the toilets .There were even discussions going on before then .
Why does it take two months for a consultation meetion to be held .??
Im telling you all this but it would have saved many many postings if Nigel had come on and stated this .
Personally im not interested in who goes to the meeting however I would not expect residents outside of River to come along and influence the budgetary process for River .
This is the budget for Dover town .
This meeting will have to be handled very carefully. If a vite is taken it will be for Dover residents to decide.Remember they will not be paying twice .Currently I do .

The Dover Society, which has membership of just under 500, is in regular communication with both DTC and DDC. It is a highly respected non-political organisation both within the community and the various Authorities it has contact with.
I sought agreement to post (291) following meeting last night because I felt the Dover Forum was a sound platform to express the view of the Society and that this be known to the many DDC and DTC Councillors who view the site and respect the non-political views of the Society.
With so many posts on this subject (mainly political by a few) has been in the main political muck-slinging and I wonder if in fact this has influenced anyone.
My own personal view is there is a need for facilities but should Dover Town Ward ratepayers foot the entire bill ? The meeting will almost certainly have people who are not within the Dover Town Wards and I question should they decide what other people should pay (see post 297 from Sue), do not forget DTC ratepayers had a near 30% precept increase by DTC two years ago. Also Dover is already the highest rate in the District.
It must be remembered this is just the start of DDC passing things to Town and Parish Councils.
Ceratinly if DTC take on the toilets these should be "pay toilets" in order to generate revenue and reduce maintenance/costs (see my post 90)

11:5037660At last a word of common sense .I value Dover Society and at times their comments can be of a great use .
I believe paid toilets is the way to go .Im sure most people would not mind paying .Im always ready to pay at Rail Stations and they do have attendants .
Sandwich Town Council have done this .
I would hope Gwyn and Charlie stay away .It is not national politics .
Yes we could have a public meeting on the way local government finances have been capped ,restrained what ever .This is recession public spending is to be cut even further .
WE as a country are in debt and what is needed is a good debate as to how we get out of this mess .
In 23 years I have never seen it look so black .At Whitfiekd we have had various administrations .One lot comes in makes changes they go then the next lot come in try to sort it out then they go,A circle of politics .
