05:2268059"it was being fought locally and woudn't have gone ahead" sounds way too optimistic to me!! Local opposition has never been a guarantee of action........

07:1568065You are so right Bern.
You dont have to just sit back and 'wait helplessly' Howard - you can offer support to Charlie and his proposal.

08:0568066They have a reporter from BBC Breakfast doing a report about the sale every so often in the programme.
The trouble is I keep missing it while I get ready for work.

08:2968071ok it has been on tv so now I understand what is going on. The choice is that the French may by it or the people of Dover may buy it basically.
Mr Elphicke said that he thinks the people of Dover should buy it. Now that sounds great but we cant even get a decent town centre so how the heck can we afford to own our own port.
Certainly I would like to own a couple of those flats which the harbour board hang on to and a bit of beach for a beach hut. I am sure there are lots of others who would like to own a bit of Port. But will anyone ever agree on anything???? I dont think so because that is surely the problem with the town centre. I wouldn't mind being on a committee if there is one. I must start looking for a job, I must have been off for too long.

09:3068076The money can be raised, as Charlie says, by a combination of bonds raised from local people and port user companies plus city borrowing. The borrowing would be repaid from port income and instead of dividends being paid away to sharegolders they would be used for regeneration.
You do not have to undertstand all the itty gritty detail to support of even to invest in the scheme - you just have to agree the principal.
I am sure that you did not understand the asset allocation structure or investment style of any pension of which you were a member.... All you would have been interested in was results. Same for this scheme, the desired result, local ownership with the profits/benefit being ploughed into the local area.

09:4768079When it fails Charlie will blame you!Barry you don't need to understand the nitty gritty, when it is my money I do!
Like the railway last year wanting to borrow my pension for a year,it will be safe they said, then they laid loads of people off,Mr Maxwell comes to mind.
So no dividends Barry the dividends would be used for regeneration and who will look after that money DDC?
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

10:0068088John, This is why you have professional advisers, people who understand these things and can advise you.
Very few people understand their investments/pensions but seek professional advice. I cannot comment on your pension because I was not asked by anybody about it and do not have the facts, but it will be nothing like what that theif Maxwell did - the 1995 act prevents that.
The very fact that you joined your pension scheme (rightly so) shows that you do put your money into things in which you do not understand the 'itty gritty'. Of course I may be wrong and you might be Level 4 qualified in Financial Services, if so quite why you work for the railway is a mystery....

10:0768089Free train travel anywhere in Europe for life, don't need a Level 4 in Financial Services to work that one out!
Are you saying you don't need brains to work for the Railway now Barry!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!

11:2668103John, no, just that if you have spent a lot of money and time getting qualified to a level that you can have some understanding of the pension you are in, you would be daft to work for the railway.
