Hang on a mo, I thought you posted that "In 2021, the average salary for the UK was £25,971"?
In passing, I notice that there doesn't appear to be any rules by which members of the Chamber of Shipping have to abide, whereas (courtesy of Article 4 of the Port Services Regulation - which I assume we've not repealed) you may be required to meet minimum standards regarding your good repute in order to pilot and moor vessels.

Debate now - Labour saying that memo went around government - with advance notice of the sackings (and tactics) and that government raised no opposition.

Hi Button,
As Professor Joad would have said 'it depends what you mean by salary', and indeed 'average' - do we use mean or median?
e.g. Mean UK full time salary 2020 was £38.600 whilst median was £31,461
The figure of £25,971 includes, I believe, part time employment.
(Plus the ONS state that the 2021 data was impacted by the Government’s furlough scheme and other pandemic disruptions).

Thank you Neil .Quite a good speech from Dover MP .Sad she mentioned the bully boy tactics.Rather like being in a school playground.Sometimes in politics one has to expect that behaviour . best to ignore .

I think that the sacked workers were making the point that the MP has supported anti workers rights in the past so didn't like her double standards.
The amusing part was when they chanted
SHAME ON YOU
She joined in clapping until she realised it was her they were chanting about lol.
Other local conservatives who would have supported the MPs views were present

Don’t presume Keith .What ever political party one supports what has happened to the 800 seafarers is disgusting.I see the petition is doing well .Nothing in my Daily paper today .If so it’s hidden away in a small column. When these non British workers are being flown in for so many weeks at a time ,what good is it to our local economy .Its the principle and as I have just said to my Son we are going backwards.its going to get worse .Meetings and meetings reports all come to nothing.Of course the workers will take to the streets .Where is DHB.?Lorries stacked yet again .

Even if sailings do have the ability to continue from Dover in the near future hopefully the port staff refuse to aid the sailings and keep the ships tied up. DFD must be extremely busy, long may that situation continue to hit P&O financially.

Listening to Paul Scully on the Today programme this morning was almost nauseous. Repeatedy asked by Nick Robinson why, if they government was so appalled by P&O's actions, they don't withdraw the taxpayers' money that will go to DP World as subsidies for their involvement in the London freeport.
He blethered and obfuscated. Presumably taking his inspiration from the haystack windbag that is his boss. But, of course, he couldn't say they will take such action. The P&O situation is just an unavoidable consequence of their strategy. And cosying up to the UAE and the Saudis is a big part of that.

I rather think that P&O has its own (shore-based) mooring gangs - that come under Unite, IIRC.

P&O claims its financial settlement offered to its sacked workers is ‘believed to be the largest compensation package in the British Marine Sector’ - worth £36,541,648.

Still could have sat around the table to try to resolve this .
Instead they have had a PR disaster

Bad from all the staff and Dover but they will get away with it because they are not a English company any more, yes you can boycott them but by this time next year it will be old news and most of the public will carry on getting on their ships.

I hope you mean 'for' the staff rather than "from".
A lot of the public will forget but I think a lot more will boycott for quite a very long time unless there is a huge change in how P&O decide to run the company. As Keith, me and many others have said it is a PR disaster.
