It's such a shame and wrong that everything is laid against the working person

The public hand wringing by the likes of Natalie and Grant Schapps was never more than a PR charade. This government was never going to prevent companies from acting like P&O did. Indeed, it is exactly what they have in mind for the Royal Mail.

Ray
And many other companies
The govt has never hidden it.
People tend to just accept it

Bob
Your govt allowed them to pay some less than £4.85 an hour
Interesting French Govt is going to make them pay minimum wage .
UK govt bottled it
Also never chased the £11million they demanded back from Pand O
No wonder the likes of right these companies rip off its own workers

Never mind the 'wonderful' P&O are now using a lovely new ferry with the help of money saved by their modern day seafaring slaves.

Did you read the article Keef?
A Department for Transport spokesperson added: “We have worked at pace to bring forward our Seafarers’ Wages Act, consulting extensively with industry and unions to ensure we have ironclad legislation in place to help prevent this from happening again, while working to strengthen seafarer rights around the world.
“We expect to bring this into force in the summer, around the same time as French legislation, forming an international minimum wage corridor across the Dover strait.”
Is this to cover all shipboard workers visiting English Ports? Would it cover someone who worked for an independant MacDonalds outlet on-board? What about cabin crew on aeroplanes? What about the ferrry to Eire? etc.etc.
As Labour are about to find passing legislation, ironclad or otherwise, is slightly more difficult than waving a magic wand over a wish list.

What PO done was very wrong we all know that, but they are not a English company anymore ,so they can operate any way they whish to ,it is not right but that is the maritime ruling and at this time Dover is a open port ,so unless the maritime law is altered ,there is nothing that can be done.

Typical with last poster , pull up The ladder in alright Jack !
If he was to be a little more informed the Govt did say it wanted it's millions back it gave them during the covid crises and that as it could do so it wanted the company at the very least to pay the minimum wage .
Now the French Govt is moving in that direction the UK govt is again saying that should happen .
So for those that lost there jobs and for those presently working for £4.80 an hour we should be highlighting this companies failures

Brexit, in Dover, had one job - to “prevent these low wage foreigners from coming over here and taking our jobs”. To argue it failed doesn’t do it justice, it’s actually in a worse place than we started. Even my expectations weren’t that low.
